Am I missing something here? Is the 5870 now the best bang for the buck?

Enjoying mine I picked up 3 weeks ago. The Supply of them gets smaller each day, so it's best to get them while you can.

Proof that it's an awesome deal. Still as fast or faster than every Nvidia card except the 570, 580, and 590. Competition is good, but Nvidia really hasn't tried hard since it shook up the market with the GTX460.

Huh? If you say so.

Indeed. That is what I picked up my 2nd 5850 for, and I thought that was a good deal. There is no reason not to grab two of those if you can swing it...

I game at 1680x1050 so the 5850 is still perfect for me. I'll probably look at either the 7870 or 7950 for a replacement (or the nvidia counterpart).

Although with most games being console ports I sometimes wonder what the point is.

Would it be wise to run a 5870 on a Antec TruePower New 550W PSU? Expecting my tax return any day now...

Huh? If you say so.

Do you disagree? The 5870 pricing is not in response to Nvidia, it's in response to AMD itself - the 5870 has to be cheaper than the 6950. You could say the 6950 1GB is hitting $200 because of the 560Ti, but the 6950 1GB's real competition is the 6950 2GB. The 6950 1GB is both faster and cheaper than a 560Ti, so it didn't have to undercut Nvidia but did so anyway.

Yeap, no problems. Hell, I just got in two of those 5870s from that sale, and I"m running them crossfire on a 460 watt Corsair with an Phenom II x4. I'm skimming the absolute top of the power supply, but it runs and I haven't had any stability issues yet.

Granted it's only temporary; I have a 700w 80+silver Seasonic coming in the mail, but it's not due to arrive until tomorrow. But heck, for just a single card you won't have any problems.

5870 is cheap because its a ELO'ed product and does not do so well in the crossfire scaling arena.

I much rather have a 6870 for about the same price on newegg.

But the 5870 for 180$ is not bad at all, even a gtx560 for $209 shipped AR looks good also.
There seems to be lots to choose from in that price point.

On a side note, I just saw a 6870 with a 975 core overclock from the factory, sheesh nice!

I've been having a few occasional issues and am thinking that my 500watt Seasonic is being taxed a little too much. Other than that the card has been great.

What kind of issues? I doubt they are PSU related. You have plenty of power to run a 5870. Your system probably peaks at 350w.

If less power consumption is the main priority here I'd rather wait it out for the newer 28nm GPUs coming out soon. The reduced fabrication size should bring about greater power consumption reduction and reduced temperatures and most importantly greater performance.

But for OP he wants to use a single card so I don't think power consumption is a big concern. Now only if I can get my hands on one of these :awe:

hrm, I may be blowing the power draw issues then. I'm only going for single cards. Ideally, I wanted to stay as close to $100 as possible since I'm not a heavy gamer. But at the same time, I wanted to game at native res (1920x1200 for me).

I've got a decent power supply to meet the minimum for a 6950 I think (550w OCZ stealth I think).

Had some sparkles(parts of the screen getting a shimering random colours effect) and the occasional green line across the screen. I flashed to the latest Vidcard BIOS yesterday and haven't noticed it since, so perhaps that fixed the issue. I'll certainly wait and see a few days before making a purchase.
