If you are holding onto the card for years, the 5770 might be better. I only say this because it will give you DX11, so you won't need to upgrade your video card in the future just to play a game that requires it (like I had to for Bioshock, even though it wasn't nearly as good as I was led to believe. - I had a X800XL which didn't support SM 3.0)

Will I be missing any potential by forgoing those 512 MBs of memory? No, right?

won't be able to use "High" setting textures in GTA 4 without using commandline instructions (expect lots of stuttering if you force "High" quality textures). most other games will stay below 512 VID RAM at your resolution unless you DL a texture mod.

Stalker SoC also uses more than 512 VID RAM playing at 16*10 with the Stalker Complete 2009 mod. don't know if Vanilla SoC stays within 512 VID RAM. there doesn't seem to be any texture swapping stutter though. however there are points where the game will always freeze up and cache data in. this is an issue with the game engine and not because of texture swapping.

Regular STALKER ran fine on my 9800GTX+ but wasn't up to snuff for the Complete 09 mod.

Well, I bit the bullet and bought a 5770. Should be a marked improvement from my X1900 along with drastically improved power consumption. I hope XFX is still up to snuff after their whole 4890 ordeal a little while ago.

Thanks for all your help, guys.

Good call. I am late to the party, but I was also going to say go HD5770. Even if your resolution is not that high, it doesn't mean the firepower will be wasted. My son and I are into RTS games, and with a Radeon HD 4830 on a 1440 x 900 we were unable to max the details in Universe at war, world in conflict or supreme commander. Oh, the computers have quad cores, so it wasn't cpu bottle necks. With the HD 5770, we can max everything and get solid 50-60 fps. In fact, in universe at war we had to dial down shader detail one notch and the AA only to 4X to get acceptable framerates.
