Am I making a mistake?

I spent a few bucks on this system:

AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 512k S939 2.4GHz

eVGA GeForce 6800GT 256MB DVI/VO

Cooler Master Hyper 6 P4/K8 CPU Cooler

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum NForce3 Ultra Motherboard S939

Corsair Value Select 1GB (512MBx2) PC-3200

Western Digital HD 74 GB 10k RPM Raptor ATA

I had a hard time chosing a Case & PSU, got fed up with looking a went a budget route. This is what I chose:

http://www.newegg.com/app/view...=11-105-107&depa=1

Will this work? I know I've heard generic PSU's are not very good, but what kind of problems can occur from a cheap power supply? Can I permanently damage other parts in the system?

I still have time to cancle this order since it's the holiday and I doubt Newegg is processing orders.

Please reply

The PSU might be ok, and i doubt you can harm anything, but if i were you id look into buying the best PSU you can afford. A cheap PSU can cause all sorts of headaches when running a high end PC. I had an Antec Truepower 430 and it ran my system, but only barely (and Antecs arent bad PSUs) so i bought a PC Power and Cooling 510 and havent looked back :)

If you check the pics @ newegg, you will see that your power supply has only 18 Amps on the +12 volt line. Not very much for a 500 watt psu. Most of the amps are going to the +5 volt and the rest to the +3.3 volt. I would look for a power supply that has @ least 22-25 amps on the +12 volt line. You also might want to find a psu with dual +12 volt lines.

As for a good case recommendation: Get a Lian-Li. I have 3 and I love them. If you can spare the $$$, check the V series. Sweet stuff! As for a good psu: Vantec, Antec, PC Power and Cooling are where I would look.

If you have any probs during boot up, let us know.

Good luck!

Well damn. Newegg has a link to "cancel order" but it does nothing but show the invoice. I contacted them via-email to replace the case with a antec 550 truepower, but I have a feeling once they receive an order and get paid, I'm stuck with it. I hope I can return it, but have noticed it stamped everywhere you can only exchange items for the same item. I hope they'll be flexible with this rule since I notified the prior to recieving it.

Btw thanks for the advise. I most likely will throw a Truepower in that case if I have no other option. Hopefully that'll work

Get an Antec Neo 480W or 550W true Power.. Why go cheap on the most important part of your system???

I wouldn't be able to respect myself if I had that system inside a cheap case powered by a cheap PSU...

I would cancel the order on the case. Seems almost like money isn't an issue for you so get a better case. I think internals are the most important part of case and I didn't see any internal pics on Newegg...maybe I'm just blind. I don't think brand name is crucial but I choose Cooler Master because their cases are sleek, nice, and have nice features.
