Am I losing much with SSD in IDE mode?

Put a different mobo in my system. Forgot to change it to ahci before OS install. Am I losing much using it in IDE compared to ahci?

If you are using a G2 Intel, yes, you will lose the ability to TRIM the disk when usage of the space is almost full.

Trim doesn't work in IDE? Crap! If I change it to ahci will it work or will I have to reinstall OS?

I've tried the registry edit method which works without error but I didn't really see a speed increase. I have a Supertalent ssd and not intel, though. My motherboard (Gigabyte EP45-UD3P) has two options in the bios that you can be toggled to "AHCI" instead of IDE. I don't remember what the second option is called (not near my home pc), but do I need to toggle them both for AHCI to work correctly? Hope the OP doesn't mind my question, I'm interested in seeing what he finds out.

IDE to AHCI

Exit all Windows-based programs.
Press [Win] + R or take the RUN option from the start menu.
Now type regedit there and press Enter Key to open up the Registry Editor Window.
If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\msahci
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0 [3 is default], and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
Restart your computer
Go to BIOS and enable AHCI, Save & Reboot
Another restart will be required to finish the driver installation.

I don't believe there is much of a speed increase but not having trim is a big deal. I noticed my g2 80gb slowing down alot last night and I'm sure not having trim is the reason. Never had the problem before when I had it on ahci.

Hmm, I'm curious if my Supertalent needs AHCI for trim also.

Just so you know, I am almost sure that TRIM (among other ssd tweaks in windows 7) are only enabled if an SSD is detected during the install process.

So this might not be ideal.

The drive would still be detected in Ide mode or ahci mode as far as I know. I've read that trim will work in IDE or AHCI and I've also read it won't? Now your saying unless you install in ahci it won't support trim regardless. I'm confused.

Anyone have the answers?

TRIM will work in either mode.

Correct.
TRIM is only a command that is passed down the ATA stack, and will work equally well in IDE mode or AHCI mode.

I run mine in IDE mode since it boots up faster. The speed diff vary depends on what u use the ssd for. I use it for gaming and there is absolutely no diff for game load time in ide or ahci mode.
