Am I just imagining it or....

Are 54G routers really noticably faster than B routers?

I had a B Microsoft router that died, and a linksys B router that decides it's going to drop the IP the cable modem gives it every few hours.

I went and bought a Dlink 54G router for $39 at Best Buy (after 20 rebate), and it seems noticably faster for browsing.

Maybe it's just my mind playing tricks

regarding the router dropping th IP given to it every few hours.....are you sure the MAC address on the router is regitered with the cable co? or at least clone the MAC to the one [nic] that you originally used when you first provisioned your cable modem setup. I've seen this situation cause dropped ip leases, and when the router was poperly provisioned, no more problems.

If your cable co doesn't like use of routers or will blame all problems on router regardless of the problem, then just tell them the mac addr is for a new NIC because your old one died.

It's your mind playing tricks, unless the connection to your B router was bad enough that you were getting less than your maximum broadband bandwidth in throughput, and the G router enabled better throughput.

Yeah, probably the second one, some routers are lemons. One of the reasons Microsoft is getting out of the router business is because those things failed at such a high rate. Maybe yours was going for a while.

I wonder why they fail so much?

We used to have a Linksys B router that did the exact same thing. You had to unplug the power cord and plug it back in to reset it and get a new IP for it every few hours. We finally ended up updating the firmware in the router, and that completely fixed it. Just a thought.

What wireless NIC do you have?

54G (802.11g) is designed to run at 54mbps, whereas 802.11B can only carry 11mbps.

Also, do you have cordless phones in your house? 900mhz phones will interfere with 802.11b, and 2.4ghz phones will interfere with 802.11g signals (we had two 2.4ghz phones. the wireless connection would be dropped frequently. phones unplugged = rock solid connection and better reception).
