Am I hurting my monitor in any way?

my Syncmater 730b only goes up to 70 at 1280x1024, but I deselected the box that says "only display modes this monitor supports" so I could get 85. Am I hurting anything doing this?

if you run your refresh rate higher than your monitor supports you risk damage and early failure . . . are you really getting 85hz? i doubt it

I don't know if I am getting 85 or not, but 70 isn't too bad. Text isn't as sharp to me but I'll adjust. Just bought it so I don't want to do anything to mess it up!

you usually have to "force' it and quite often it will just go 'black' with an out-of-range message.

Yours is CRT, right?

i have 1 19" Samsung 955D and i find it's "sweet spot" is 11x8 at 85hz . . . you might try playing around with yours to get your personal best setting . . . of course, if it's LCD, only run it at it's native resolution,

It's LCD and yes I keep it at it's native 1280x1024. Now that I've tested the refresh at 70 isn't that bad, especially through DVI. Now with games... there are some games I can't play so well at my native res as my rig isn't spectacular (A64 3000+, 1gig ram, 9800pro) so would using a diff res in a game be bad if I have to use a low one? Or would it be better to turn down the graphics some to play at that res?

Use recommended refresh rate for LCD. Installing the LCD drivers should set that. Never go out of spec, unless in games you can't help it and have to change the resolution. Most LCD refresh rates are 60Hz though, like mine. There is little reason to go above that.

In today's day and age, you can't damage your monitor, because if the signal goes out of spec, the monitor will tell you out of range or some such thing.

However, using the monitor with optimal resolution and refres rate gives optimal image quality.

If your CRT was made after the middle ages, high refresh rates won't get through to damage it. I've set some ice-age CRT out of range and it made a messy image, but it didn't damage the monitor. It won't damage an LCD, period. I've run 1280x1024@75Hz DVI since I got my Samsung 710T. If max vertical rate is 75 Hz on your monitor spec sheet, then go ahead, set it to 75 Hz. And if you set it to 85 Hz, Windows will either cap it to 75 Hz and it will look like it worked, or you'll want the 10 seconds of your life back when your monitor's OSD says out of range and Windows' confirmation dialog counts down. You do want it set as high as possible so your display will respond as fast as possible.

since its an lcd I wouldnt change the refresh from stock, it probably doesnt change much anyway

Im no expert, but IMO you shouldnt worry about running games at lower resolutions, my lcd's native resolution is also 1280, but I run most games at 1024
