This is on their main page... Atacom

AMD XP 2500+ Barton Core $192 OEM & $199 Retail

It says an estimated date of 2/10/03. It seems pretty hot for a new Barton Core. Any feedback?

<edit> It says on the product description page an estimated date of 2/14/03.

Very interesting. I was going to get a 2100+ this week, but maybe I'll hold off. I didn't realize these were so close to release.

Hmmm lots of cheap AMD options now. I'm planning on putting a computer together and I'm not sure what to buy.

1700+ chip that can overclock to around 2600+ for $45
2100+ chip that can overclock to around 3000+ for $95
2500+ barton chip that should overclock to 3???+ for $192

Guess I'll have to hold off on the chip purchase and see the Barton reviews when they come out on the 10th.

ya...in a way, I hope the reviews aren't too positive...I'll save $100 and buy a 2100+ that way. =)

TechDepot (subsidiary of Office Depot) will have the retail Barton for 210 - 10 - 3% eBates...WHEN is the only question. Quite frankly I'm happy with my 2400+, TYVM. Who needs an extra 256kb of cache when you have as many desktops as I do? I've got a total of 1408kb of L2 over six chips! 😀

Also, initial reports show Bartons not excelling in the overclocking dept. They're 1.83Ghz-native chips running on a 333Mhz FSB (at first - God KNOWS what the native speed will be when the 400Mhz parts debut sometime Aug-Sept timeframe). AMD dropped the Mhz and upped the PR rating even more, even though historically having 512kb of L2 vs. 256 has only netted performance gains of 7-10% MAX.

new chips will be somewhat slow. Decent overclocks but not spectacular (on the average). Give it like 2 months. Not only will they be cheaper, but AMD will have sold all the "first runs". By then (or maybe 3 or 4 months) the lowend chips will overclock almost the same like the fastest ones.

AMD's are getting more than that. Even the first reports on these barton 2500's are getting higher than that.

I heard it could be 400FSB, but honestly. Who know? $200 for a 2500+ isnt that bad IMHO, maybe it'll drop the price for the 2600+ 😛

I've never ordered from them. I found their ad in Computer User - that free mag at the SF Bay computer stores.

It says their address is in Fremont.

<edit> The ad says STORE HOURS 9AM - 7PM Monday - Friday

NM, I see on Pricewatch that the Barton 2500+ is listed at 333MHz FSB.

Seriously though, the Hot deals in prcessors are the 17000-2100 models.

Just an amazing price for the preformance.

For the folks that said they were looking now, just get something around $90 and save you money for the next upgrade. 🙂

As I said earlier - the 400Mhz Barton parts are suspected to come out in August-September - just before Hammer is expected to launch.

Hammer will be launching MUCH sooner than that. Try March or April. Hammer is a "brand name". Opteron will launch first as AMD's concentration is on making money. Athlon 64 is the line that has been delayed. That is a "desktop" version.

Ive ordered from Atacom and I have picked up at their place in Fremont at least twice.
Same ol type of place though. Chinese establishment but Ive had good luck with them.

I have ordered from Atacom once and once only. They didn't ship my order for nearly 3 weeks even though nothing was on hold. They told me they were waiting for my credit card to go through which is crap because it is a debit card that approves all orders even if they are overdrawn.

Never ordering from them again. However, $200 for a Barton 2500+ is pretty awesome imho.
