i can only think of two potential problems:

1) if your case is bumped, it could sned your drive flying inside. last thing you want is your hard drive to die because of this. (i've had this happen before)

2) heat. not sure how hot it would get sitting at the bottom of the case

it would be even more sad when the case is bump the HD sent flying inside take out your PCI cards before the HD dies

you can leave it hanging out the computer case! ;)
Or set it on top of the case if you are ok with leaving your computer's guts exposed. If your computer is in a place where it doesn't get touched much, then you don't have to really worry about it getting bumped. My 3rd hard drive is just sitting freely in the bottom 5 1/4" bay in my enlight case cuz I don't have brackets... or some bum has mine. but, it's fine. And have the pcb side facing up.

Don't swet it! Sercure it as best you can to keep it from shifting around, like tiger suggest, but heat or shoting it out is not really an issue. Christ, I use to duct tape mine where ever there was room.

Had the same problem, got some hardrives & CD-R writers via the "Hotdeals Forum" I eventually run out of space in my computer case. Bought a external SCSI drive case (holds 4 half height drives) and placed all my HD and CD-R inside. Got a IDE controller and a 36" IDE cable for the IDE drives/CD writer and a 18" external SCSI cable for the SCSI drives/CD Writer. I only make to sure to power them on before booting up the computer so that they are recognized, specially for the IDE. To me it is a more safe and secure way of holding the drives.

A while back I had 8 drives in a system and only had space for 4 of them. The other 4 I let hang until I was done testing, which was about 2 weeks

Set your new hard drive in the floppy's place, (if you have one)and let the floppy drive hang. I have heard of too many tragedies with leaving a hard drive loose in the case.
