Unisom is a sleep aid (doxylamine Succinate).

I work overnight shifts thursday - saturday. I switch my sleep schedual on thursday and sunday. Today I was out of benadryl, the medication I usually use to fall asleep at 1pm. So I rummaged around the medicine cabinet and found some Unisom. Ok, I don't remember buying these, but whatever, I have them. I took two of them, and just after I swallowed, I saw that the expiration date is 01/2005!!

Am I going to die?
I think the world is going black....

Yes, they're festering in your stomach right now. Soon you will bloat and burst like a pigeon given Alka Seltzer.

I would reply with a helpful answer but you are most likely already dead or at least too weak to read my life saving advice.

This is quite true - typically the expiration date on medicines are the guestimated dates for when their effectiveness has fallen to about 90% (or weakened by 10%). A general rule of thumb is, for every year the medicine passes in expiration, it loses another 10% in effectiveness. Of course this is just a ballpark figure - it may vary greatly, and in no way am I telling anyone to use expired meds.

My point is, the bulk of America's medicines "expire" before they are used, and manufacturers sometimes repackage these meds and send them to the needy in 3rd world countries.

It would be ironic if expired sleep medication put you into a deep sleep...

Generally speaking, medication loses potency over time and expired medication is usually just going to do nothing or very little. It is not likely that the FDA would let a drug that turned into poison out on the streets...

I'm thinking more of the line of Spaceballs at the dinner cafe.

Yes, you're going to die.

No, it probably won't be from the pills.

Most expired medicine is fine, at least according to my M.D. friends.

yes, you will fitfully fall asleep, terrorized by nightmares and then physical pain as the expired drugs eat away at your insides and you'll finally wake up dead

In most cases this is true; however, there are some types of medications that do become more potent. Ear drops, I think, are one of those types.

OP: You aren't going to die. You will live another day to come back and visit us here at ATOT. :)

Who uses ear drops, though?
