Am I getting hustled by my car insurance company?

Estimates are just that. Estimates. Even a mechanic can't always give an accurate estimate until they are pretty much working on fixing the problem. No, an inaccurate estimate doesn't necessarily hurt a shop. They are not bound to the estimate price. They may not get repeat customers if they are regularly very inaccurate, but if they have an insurance company feeding them repairs, they might not worry about that.

100% true. They pay your deductible.

Why are they charging me the deductible this time?

They are trying to get me to settle for a total loss and give me a payout, but are asking me to pay the deductible out of that money. So instead of $4500 they're giving me $4000.

Because of going after the at fault party, you are going through your insurance company. If you want you $500 you can sue the other party for it.

Basically, because you are lazy.

Sounds like that accident you pocketed the money on was the real reason. No way you were hit at 25-30mph and only caused $750 damage. There was almost certainly structural damage below the surface. You were taken by the previous accident insurance company.
yeah... a couple months ago, I was in a bumper-to-bumper traffic, 5-10 mph rear end collision and that alone caused like $600 in damage to my bumper to get the paint fixed.

I'm not sure why you're being condescending, but the other insurance company is a fraudulent small company that doesn't answer calls and is completely useless. They have a terrible rating on the BBB and numerous complaints, I had spent quite a bit of time trying to get through to them but they do not pick up. Even Geico wasn't able to get through to them since last October.

Then you sue the guy directly. Even if he is broke, you at least get a judgement against him for the complete cost to get it fixed. AFTER you get it fixed completely.

You should not be calling the other insurance company. You should be talking to your company and your company only.

I rear ended a guy one time. His insurance company called me and they said they wanted to ask me a couple of questions. I gave them my insurance companies phone number and let them take care of it. I never heard from them again. That is why you are writing your insurance company the check every month.

There was a bunch of damage to the rear from a prior accident that somebody attempted to repair and did completely wrong. I never authorized a repair like this and until now was completely unaware that there were any accidents on the car prior to my ownership.

So basically Geico is saying that somebody attempted to repair my car for an accident that isn't on record,

You are forgetting the option that the car was in an accident before you bought it and the owner tried to fix it himself without reporting it to Carfax. Either way this car has 4 or 5 accidents on it and is jinxed. It should be taken off the road before something really bad happens.

Yea, that's messed up. I'm surprised Toyota certified the car and still sold it to me.. fuck Toyota anyways, never buying again.

I still owe $7500 on the car - the insurance will claim it as a total loss and give me either $5800 or $3900 for it depending on the state law for prior damage.

That means I will owe either $3600 or $1700 on the car - I plan to keep the car and sell it somewhere for $1000-2000 since it still runs fine. Hopefully I can break even and get a new car.

He's already spent the $750 on hookers and blow. That money is long gone.

He's also forgetting that once the insurance company writes a car off, it becomes theirs. He would need to buy it back from them.

And owing $7,500 on a 7 year old car at this point? Jesus. No GAP insurance?

My wife and daughter have each been in accidents within the last year, each at about 25-30 miles. Both vehicles were less than 2 years old, both were total losses. As others have said, you should have had your car taken apart rather than just looked over and under. Not much you can do at this point but refuse the insurance and keep the car.

I have a $500 deductible, and it made sense to have the other insurance company pay for it so that my premium wouldn't go up..

If you saw the outside of my car, you wouldn't have been able to tell that it was even in an accident. I was there when the guy did my estimate - he looked at literally everything, got underneath the car, and was very thorough. I thought it was in his best interest to find as much damage as he could, so I trusted his judgement. The car drove fine since the crash and had zero mechanical issues - I had literally no idea that there was hidden damage.

How thorough? Take off the bumper or anything? It sounds like the 25mph accident wasn't repaired properly to me.

I was rear ended a few years ago. It didn't look bad but there was over $17k in damages.

I'm still stuck on the description of the bigger chain reaction rear-end accident, and the $750 estimate.

If it were me, and I heard that number from the adjuster, I would have had a laughing fit.

Geico told me that when they make a payment to me, I have the option of either salvaging it, or taking the money (minus the cost of salvaging) and keeping the car. The payment would go directly to the bank financing my car, and I'd be on the hook for the remainder.

The car was bought in 2012, fyi.

All three cars that were rear ended were parked in heavy traffic. Wasn't a moving collision, we were all less than 2-3 feet apart, fyi.
