Am I crazy to be considering spending ~$90 on a fan?

Pretty insane. I personally went with a Lasko 18" oscillating fan. I only use it on low because it's too loud/powerful. :p Anything other than low and I can't hear the television and it starts disrupting my sleep! It was $30 at Wal-Mart. $100 is pretty steep, but if you can stand the sound, then go for it. I bet your fan will last through 5 lives of my fans. ;)

I'm using an industrial axial flow fan that's installed in air ducts. Nothing beats that thing but the noise it makes is horrendous!

Try this?

If you are trying to cool the upstairs an attic fan is the way to go. It works extremely well and is hardly noticable other than the drop in temperature.

"What ya got on that Thermalright HS?"

"Ohhh...nothing crazy...just 1/3HP 30" 8000CFM unit."

:D

Can you connect that to the motherboard's fan headers?

;)

3GHz is within reach ;)

I already have two A/C's Ross. This is for when it's cool outside, and I want to circulate natural air through the house. This fan is not for cooling the house down for when it's hot.

Fans like that are well worth their price tag.

My family had one in an upstairs window for years, it ran 24/7 every summer for at least a decade. Kept the entire house cool.

Cheap $20 fans are practically disposable, a well made fan will run forever.

We have a £40 steel fan, it's between 16" and 18" (can't be bothered to go and measure it) and it's excellent.

My uncles house gets REALLY hot (105+) upstairs in the summer (no attic, low celings) and they are thinking about getting one of these these to put in a window upstairs. Do you think it would make any difference in temperature? How much air can that thing possibly move.

I have two similar fans, commercial-grade, steel blades, etc. etc. I bought them years ago, but they still work perfectly.

I think I picked them up at Costco for $50 each.

you can get basically that same fan for like 50$ from some other manufacture i have had 2 of them by different manufactures, both died tho as my moronic roomate left it too close to teh window and it sucked up the cord for the blinds and was found purnt out hanging from the window
the other by brother knocked out a 3rd story window - still awating replacement for that one

o and my AC only cost 90$

No remote controll, I say don't do it. Once you have a fan with a remote, you'll never go back...

I've never seen a commercial-grade fan with a remote control.

It's probably decent but not as powerful as the one you had. We had one of those when I was a kid. The motor was bolted to the bottom of the cabinet and the blade was belt driven. That thing was like an airplane prop when at high speed. You could probably chop up a small animal if it got caught in there it was so powerful.

They don't make fans like that anymore...:( Actually, that's not true. The compressor unit for my central A/C has a fan like that in it.

No, it's definately more powerful than the 40 year old Air King I have. It moves a lot of air, but the motor is small compared to the one I linked. I know that brand is more, but it's the same brand of my old fan, and it lasted for 40 years....
