Here's a question that probably makes me sound like a complete n00b, but here it is anyway. I've got the opportunity to acquire some old surplus Dell OptiPlex GX260 computers, with Pentium 4 2.0G Socket 478 processors. I see that some newer Intel processors are available in Socket 478 flavors, but I know that processor compatibility is dependent on more than just what socket is on the motherboard.
Is it possible that I could fit an Intel Celeron D 340 (S478, 533MHz FSB) processor into one of these old machines (Intel 845 chipset) and give it a new lease on life? I need a good desktop machine to supplement my Core Duo laptop, and a more expensive system build isn't the best-looking option right now. The big question is still the motherboard -- what sort of processors would be supported by the BIOS, etc.
Does this half-baked idea have any chances of being successful?
