AM I BEING TAPPED?????

There is a phone box (a huge switch, I guess) 2 houses down from mine. I am on DSL. There has been 2 vans sitting in front of it with people on laptops for the past 6 hours! How can I tell if my phone/internet is being monitored?

Phone box and switch are two different things. Switches (in Lucents 5E case) can be two lineups 20ft long of cabinets. They are probably just "talking" back to the main switch with the laptops. We had to do it all the time for hours at a single sitting when I worked wireless.

Sheesh, do you watch movies at all? You could do the Beverly Hills Cop bit, which is distracting them by having a pizza delivered to them, and sticking bananas up their exhaust. Also, like in Enemy of the State, call the police on a pay phone saying that there are 2 suspicious vans in the area dealing drugs or something. But since they're near a switch i doubt that's plausible. Hell, just knock on their window and ask what they're doing.

If the Feds are monitoring your can't tell. Mainly because they don't even have to leave Washington to tap you. But if you think someone else is, you can. Get a multi-meter(voltage meter) and attach it your phone line. It should read about ~48 volts. Give or take a few volts, mine is 52 volts. When you pick up the phone the voltage should drop somewhere under 10 volts. If sometime durning your phone call the voltage drops lower, your phone is being tapped, or someone in your house picked up the phone. And like I said, you can't tell if the feds are listening b/c they can do that from the comfort of Washington.
