It's nice hearing that I wasn't alone in my thinking. At first I was concerned I was putting too much emphasis on "the principle of the matter" and money in a situation where a friend of my wife's was involved. Upon hearing about this "offer", I questioned how solid this "friendship" must be. When I offer my friends used goods, I sell it to them for LESS than what I would get on the street, as opposed to seizing the opportunity to get MORE than what I would get on the street.

She works in a small office and everyone is pretty informal with each other. I wouldn't call them all "friends", per se, but they're close enough that they shouldn't be pulling stuff like this. And my wife always sees THEIR side of the story and she fails to see how she's being taken advantage of.

If this was OUR equipment and it was being sold to this lady, my wife would sell it to her for a nickel... after taking it to her house and setting it up for her.

And in a month when said lady decided there was no way she would use it and that it was just taking up space, she'd request that my wife remove it from her home... and my wife would, naturally, feel obligated to do so.

It's funny... guys are totally different. A friend of mine had this HUGE, old stereo system he was trying to dump a few years ago. First he tried to get a couple hundred bucks from me. "Dude, I don't even want the thing. It's humongous and it's 15 years old. I don't want it for the same reasons you don't want it." Finally, he said "just take it... I just need it out of my house."

A few weeks later a bunch of us were all out to lunch and he said "well, grab my bill and we'll call it square."

"Grab your bill? Grab my cock motherfscker! We're going to my house and loading that son of a bitch right back into your truck!"

What's a little ribbing between guys ;)
Says it all.

Guys just don't let "friends" get over on them, and have the easily understood tool of rough humor to say "****** You" to someone who tries without it becoming all tears and eternally nursed grudes.

Women more generally like to be "understanding" and "nice" and so can be more easily taken advantage of by a pushy female acquaintance.

Damn you, pushy female acquaintances, damn you! (Shakes metaphorical fist and glowers menancingly.)

tsk-tsk.

If we end up getting an elliptical and my wife uses it for more than a week, I'll buy you a house. A house with a Ferrari inside.

While I admire her intentions, I *know* her tenacity. I've been running 20 miles a week on our treadmill for over 4 years. She's been on it once.

Besides, if she truly wants one, I'd rather get a quality one that we know is the right size for her. Again, I'd rather spend $500 on one she'll use than $160 on one she won't.

so it's simple. tell her she can buy it on one condition - that she promises to use it consistently for one year.

yeah, great idea. Typical conniving woman.
screw you? yeh. there's a good plan.

sure, if you want to. :p

WTFREADINGCOMPREHENSION!!!

Damn it, he's saying that it cost them $170 including tax in the first place. They aren't charging him tax.

Yeah they're just trying to mark up a used item.

About 2 years ago my wife whined about getting an elliptical/stepper. I got her one and put it in the living room where there is a tv. She now tells me she wants to move it upstairs to my Home Theatre/computer room. I said no.
My 2.75 year old son climbs onto the sucker more than she does.
Good news is it is a 200 dollar pos, not a 2000 dollar pos.

I didn't read the thread, but a $170 elliptical is trash. Don't even bother. Life Fitness/Precor is the only way to go...

Yup, that $150 equipment is $170 junk basically, no one will ever use it.

O i know, you buy this and you buy that for your home, yo never use it, you always figre you can do it later.

So buy eachother a gym card, the first to not show owes $500.

No less than that.
