I'll be staying in Geneva for the summer and started looking for an apartment. There are a few good postings, so I've been sounding out e-mails. One of the replies is from a guy who apparently was born in London, lives there still, yet his English is absolutely terrible and he wants me to wire transfer him ~$1700. It sort of makes sense, he doesn't want to fly to Geneva without some sort of deposit for holding the apartment, but it just sounds incredibly fishy.

Thoughts, ATOT? He gave me a phone number, but the e-mail just sounds so much like a scam

Incase you want to rent a room,then the price for a room is 600CHF while the deposit payment still remains 2000CHF because there will no be any roommate who will be sharing my flat with you.I will only locked up the second room.

TERMS IN THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS WHICH IN THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS.
1. The Tenant Will Pay a month Rent and Security Deposit in Advance to the Landlord Before Moving in to show a Good Sign of seriousness and the Security Deposit will be refunded back to the Tenant and the return of funds must be completed not later than 2 days of the termination of the Contract.
2.The deposit payment will be paid before my coming over to Geneva....
This is due to my past experiences of meeting unserious tenants in the past which make me to waste my time and that of my lawyer in preparation of the legal documents..
But the One Month advance payment will be paid at the exchange of keys.After the tenant have view my flat inside and he is satisfy with it.3.The Tenant's must agree that they and their respective invited visitors will not :
i. Commit any act, which results in serious disruption of the rights of each to peacefully Occupy the premises
ii. Commit any act, which results in physical harm to the parties, a member of her household, visitors or neighbors
iii. Cause or allow invited visitors to cause a nuisance.
iv. Commit any form of harassment on the grounds of race, color, religion, sex, sexual
orientation, age or disability, which may interfere with the peace
and comfort of, or cause offense to, each other, a member of her household, visitors or
neighbors.
v.. Play or allow to be played any radio, television, record or tape recording or musical
instrument so loudly that it causes a nuisance or annoyance to the other party.

(b) Use of Premises: The Tenant agrees to use the premises for residential purposes and not to operate a business at the premises nor to use the premises for any illegal purposes. If you agree with the terms and conditions above,then you get back to me with the details below so that i can forward it to my lawyer to prepare the contract documents and we could hasten the renting process so that you can move in on time.Number of Tenant (s)..

First sentence should tell you everything you need to know "Thanks very much for your Kind interest in my apartment"
 
Just find one when you get there. I'm sure there will be an apt. available in the summer. Worst case is you stay in a hotel for a couple of days while you search. Don't throw $1700 away to something that is 85% likely to be a scam.

You'd have to be reaaaly stupid to fall for that.

Have you never rented an apartment before? The doorman or the super has all the keys, which means you can check it out even w/o the owner being there.

Sounds like the email was written by someone from Africa.... Perhaps even.... Nigeria

The line: "Hope to read from you soonest" is a dead ringer for a Nigeria scam artist.
 
Can't believe how many people are falling for the op's joke. Someone with almost 10k in posts here would obviously know of these scams by now.
