Am I a jerk

I think you should've told him to smell the glove and then laugh if he didn't get the reference.

I suppose that's not a real band anyway, though.

I work in a supermarket that is mostly shopped by gambling, alcoholic, obese, self righteous people. I live on an organic farm and eat food that was largely grown by us and get the rest from TJ's or Whole Foods, I don't really drink much, and don't gamble. I learned a long time ago to try to keep my personal and business life fairly separate unless I am pried.

I can't tell if this guy is being sarcastic or serious. Talking about self righteous but lives on an "organic farm" and shops at Trader Joes. Lulz.

Christ, you pinhead asshole, he's not pushing either, just giving you background why he keeps his views to himself when you and your Mom come waddling into the supermarket where he works.

He wasn't angry or anything but I detect a self-righteousness in the way he was talking.

Based on the exchange, you're not a jerk and he's not an asshole, but you do seem far too sensitive to be allowed out in public without some sort of protective sphere and large-font warning signs. 😉

In adult life, we learn that people disagree, even strenuously, often because each has a small piece of the truth. Sometimes that piece is vanishingly small, more of a shard or a shred really, but still . . .

He had an axe to grind, and you kindly provided the opportunity. You may not realize it now, but it was a bonding moment for which he is now (most likely unconsciously) grateful.

People just want to be heard, no matter how inconsequential their opinion. It's nearly the entire concept behind ATOT.

I think he pointed out that he doesn't go around wearing his life on the farm on his sleeve. Sounds pretty not self righteous to me. One can feel self righteous, but as long as they keep their mouth shut, they aren't being self righteous.

That was pretty much the jist, thank you, and perknose as well. I only put the "organic" part in because it is a descriptor. I didn't know that using adjectives made someone self-righteous. I got that vibe from my customers because of the way they interact with each other or my coworkers and I when they are waiting in line. I have seen this attitude posted here as well, by people that have probably never worked a retail job before. Obviously it was a generalization, and there are plenty of customers that are extremely pleasant, but it is the bad apples that stick out the most.

Finally, A topic I know something about.
This proves that it is possible to have both states of being exist, in the same time, in more or less the same place !!! Where's Carl Freakin SEgan now !??!?!!? 😱

The way you answered, I wouldn't have cared. But the way you answered, you should know that some people would care. The person that asked you was the one that cared it seems.
