Am I a jerk

Regular customer walks into store. Something is playing over the radio (I can't remember what). Another customer asks what it is, I don't know. This guy asks also, I say that I'm not really into pop music. I mention I like classical music and the like better. He seems a little surprised, asks me what I think of Andrea Bocelli. I say I don't really care for him that much, I think he's popular because he's popular, an icon. I don't think he's all that amazing. He says "what do you think he's popular because he's blind"? I say "well to some extent yes". Then he seems to launch into this big thing about how good do handicapped people have to be, that he is bringing classical music to the masses blah blah blah. He's the one who asked me. He wasn't angry or anything but I detect a self-righteousness in the way he was talking.

Am I in the wrong to have said what I did or is he and ass for asking a leading question the way he did?

Yeah should have. But the guy was a regular. Would never have said anything normally.

Who cares? You can't think too much about it. As long as the customer didn't report your name to the manager, you're fine. Just be more careful in the future

I got fired for mentioning that I smoke (and sort of dicussing smoking) during a casual conversation with a customer.

Seriously though, you could have conceded that his point was valid, but that you still preferred...whateva it is you prefer. It's a tricky situation and can't be treated the same as a casual conversation. Even during a casual conversation though, when someone brings up a point that seems stupid, it takes a certain amount of tact to not sound like a Jerk/Asshole.

He's the one who brought the handicapped card into it, not you. That said, Bocelli is amazing imo. Not 'Three Tenors' level, but I still love his vocals in classical music.

I work in a supermarket that is mostly shopped by gambling, alcoholic, obese, self righteous people. I live on an organic farm and eat food that was largely grown by us and get the rest from TJ's or Whole Foods, I don't really drink much, and don't gamble. I learned a long time ago to try to keep my personal and business life fairly separate unless I am pried.
