AM I A FOOL?

Today at work, I asked for more work to do to my manager. Usually, I get about 2 to 3 hours of "spacing out" but I really want to help him out at work. Am I a fool for wanting more work?

I don't see how doing work that you're actually supposed to be doing because you get paid for doing it can be a foolish thing.

I've told the story here before, but I was working second shift once when I asked for more work because there wasn't enough to last through the shift. Not much later I got a promotion and that really started my career off. It worked out great for me.

I dont think i will get promoted any time soon since I just started my job and my contract says my raise is next year 12/31/02............. My manager and I are the 2 IT guys and I work 2 out of 3 days that he is not there. The position was created because my manager needed help and the office needed a computer guy around on days he is not there. Today, I just thought, I need to have more work on days he is not there because I want to help him out with the office as much as I can. I finally decided that I do not need to be getting paid while goofing off. I guess I took somekind of a moral stand here I suppose.

It's bizarre but.....simply having a "work ethic" puts you leagues ahead of many would-be competitors who just want to be overpaid slackers!

This is a good start if you want to make a good impression with your manager and your company and give you a good reputation. In the long run things like this can help you get raises and promotions. Another good way to show your initiative is to find IT type things on your own that need to be done around the office. Get into new stuff and learn about it. When I started working in a large data center many years ago I learned how to program on my own in various languages while I was still an operator. I could talk one-on-one with the analysts and that really impressed them (hehe - I borrowed their assembler code to write some of my progs). I was always figuring out ways to automate and improve things. I'm a senior systems analyst now (making nice $$$$) in the data center operations environment and I still like it.
