Always wondered, why is Miami so different looking?

All the photos of Miami I see, I get a feeling that Miami looks very different from most US cities. The architecture over there seems very modern, kinda like the ones you see in conceptual drawings, not the same drab architecture you see here in Houston. Why is that? There are lots of other beach cities in the US, but they don't seem to look like that.

Granted all the pictures I saw of Miami were either on TV (Miami Vice) or in magazine and the interenet, mostly of the nicer areas. But still take some pics of the nicer areas of Houston, and you will nothing different from any other US city.

I have never really been outside of Texas to judge other cities and I guess comparing Houston and Miami isn't really fair.

Since I have been watching Miami Vice and been playing GTA VC, I have been totally obsessed with Miami. Heck, sometimes I just look at the map of Miami, just to get a feel of it. Where I really wanna go in Miami is 8th street ;)

Yeah, I always thought Miami would be a nice place to visit. Watch out for all the old retired folks though. ;)

2. kind of the capitol of South America

3. Latin style

2 sec reponse before I go home for the day...

Miami achitecture was heavily influenced in the 1920s-30s byt the art-decco movement. Do soe searches on it and you will find tons of info...

Snippet:

The Miami Beach Architectural District
The Architectural District, sometimes called the Art Deco District, contains the largest concentration of 1920s and 1930s resort architecture in the United States. These vibrantly colored buildings represent an era when Miami Beach was heavily promoted and developed as a "tropical playground." The district was one of the earliest National Register listings to recognize the importance of the architecture of this period.

Wish I had more time to explain, heading home...

I live 20 mins from Miami and try to avoid it, just a pain in the arse to do anything around there, plus what you see on TV/movies/games/etc.. is only the good side there are a lot of run down parts of Miami and they never show the bums on TV. Just last week I was downtown and there was a bum in the middle of the street on a wheel chair rolling between cars and people having to dodge him just so he could beg for money with his hands out. Sad scene, South Beach is cool though, nice beach with tons of hot chicks, but doesn't even come close to Key West as far as the actually beach is concerned.

Miami isn't really that different... but it has lots and lots of flava. A lot of the architecture on larger buildings like hotels is really interesting, and there are some very nice (and some weird) houses around because it's a hot spot for rich and famous people. Like there's this one house that's built like a castle. I forget who owned it.

If you like Rockstar's games, then Miami is extra fun. You can see all the stuff from Driver and GTA:VC in real life. Miami is a really, REALLY fun city. Like... really fun. Seriously, you should go there.

Tommy, what part of Houston do you live in? :p

Don't worry man, we have a ton of bums like that in Houston, too. I think all big cities do. We have a lot of run down sh!t as well. Again... I think everybody does. South Beach is really the place to be, though. Tons of fine girls and clubs with fun VIP rooms.

Oh, Miami weather is nice, too, unless you get a tropical storm or something. Otherwise, tons of sun without the extreme temperatures of Houston, and if it rains, it rains for like five minutes and stops. Again, unless you get a tropical storm. :p I love Miami.

Bad things about Miami: Insane drivers, beach hobos.

Hey,

from what i hear Miami is the biggest dump ever ! Lots of red-necks and women with mall-bangs....trailer trash..violence. I didnt hear anthing good about miami.

But...i was in other parts of Florida...Tampa...Sarasota....and right now i am also playing Vice City (the multiplayer mod kicks a$$ although *very* buggy) and i have to say that VC totally catches the feeling like you're in a city like Tampa......eg. the cuban quarters and all that...and even how the city looks..always amazed....makes me look forward to our next vacation down there in May :)

8th Street runs through the heart of Little Havana.

Hmm, I'm curious what Houston's architecture looks like compared to NYC's and Chicago's. I love Chicago's, I know the city is very different from Houston (less sprawl and zoning)

I live in Miami. It does look different than most other cities. The art deco style is a huge part of that (especially in South Beach)

as for this post ....

"from what i hear Miami is the biggest dump ever ! Lots of red-necks and women with mall-bangs....trailer trash..violence.
I didnt hear anthing good about miami."

This is waaay off. Like any other city there are good and bad areas. As for rednecks and mall-bangs, that couldn't be more
wrong.

There are very few white people (let alone white trash) here. The vast VAST majority of people living here are latinos
of cuban or south american decent. Miami has to be one of the least white trash cities in the US. Now, it is surrounded by
southerners (and plenty of white trash) but in miami itself they're almost non existant.

Miami does tend to be more of a love it or hate it city. That's something you'll have to see for yourself if you come. If you don't
speak spanish, living here could be a little more difficult. Most people here speak spanish and english, but there are tons
of people who only speak spanish.

I live in Miami as well, and the latin culture gives it that "different" feeling. It's not like your typical US city where the city is divided by suburban and urban life; Miami is mixed everywhere... like most latin cities are.

I love living here. Great women, great night life, great weather. Only complaints are the 826 Highway when stupid people start stopping to see the airplanes land during Rush Hour
