Always, always, always buy the extended warranty

I just bought a plasma in September. The price for the extended warranty was like 30% of the cost of the tv so I didn't even consider it. It's developed a problem since then and I think I'm going to call about it and try to get it replaced, but fortunately it's still on the manufacturers warrranty.

BB's warranty is very YMMV store to store. If every BB is as good as yours, there wouldn't be so many BB hating.

IMO a lot of people need to learn what is reasonable and what isn't. These tv warranties are a perfect example - in 2003 someone will buy a $2500 42" plasma. When it breaks in 2008 they don't understand that they get a comparably spec'd 42" plasma, NOT $2500 to spend on a new tv. Granted, you can 'work the system' and get almost anything you want, but it's not how the warranty is written.

That being said, the sales people will tell you just about anything needed to get you to buy a warranty. Personally, I don't trust 16 year olds making $9/hr at best buy to help me decide whether or not to purchase anything, let alone something as major as a TV.

When I bought my plasma from BB I purchased a warranty with it. At the time it was new technology and IMO there were still some 'kinks'. My next large LCD purchase will not come with a warranty - I'll buy it from costco 🙂

I <3 Costco.

I almost never buy extended warranties but will probably buy one for my tsx before the mfg warranty expires..things are expensive as hell to replace on this thing. A clutch replacement alone is like $2k (not that that's covered under warranty but it gives an idea of how overpriced things are).

At least you got the first, and last part right

Sam's Club has great extended warranties. For $79, I extended the manufacturers 1 year warranty by another 4 years. Well worth it. So far, my Samsung plasma has been just fine. My parents' Philips plasma crapped out after 2 months. Unfortunately, dealing with the manufacturer to fix it has been much harder than dealing with the Sam's warranty people.

Only thing I've purchased an extended warranty on was my Xbox 360 at launch, and I think I did it because I was cold and delerious from waiting in line all night long.

Needless to say that one paid off.

Didn't MS extend the manufacturer warranty for all owners anyways? Or did it fail before they did that?

Yep, don't have to pay extra you get a 2 year warranty on TV sold at Costco.

There's a reason they sell them, and it's not to improve customer service. 😉

I do wish Costco hadn't dropped their lifetime return policy for TV's.

+1 for Sam's Club. It's still lifetime return.

The warranty on my Maxima expired 20k miles ago and I am still getting calls over a year later warning me that my warranty is expiring soon and that I should act quickly to get it extended...

LOL

Why on God's green earth would you spend $400 to replace a circuit board on a 14-month-old plasma when BRAND NEW 42" Panasonic plasmas go for $699 shipped these days?

Heck, if you waited another couple weeks, you could probably pick up a new one for $599 on Black Friday.

Sentimental reasons? 😕

That's bogus. Warranties are meant to benefit the store, not you. The only time you would want to buy one is when you can't pay the upfront cost of repairing/replacing the object.

I don't think so. I'm so far ahead by not buying warranties, that I could lose a couple of big-ticket items and still be ahead of the game.

Same here. I have only bought a warranty on a vehicle and it ended up being well worth it.

Yep. The money you save will just about always be more than the cost of a new (insert whatever breaks here). I'll say this much, stores push for the warranty for a reason. They're priced high enough that the stores make a killing on them. The odds are with them, not you.

This. A warranty is like insurance, it is a bet.

Guess that might be an option for those that have a Costco nearby. Much like the OP having the repair center 100 miles away, my closest Costco is over 2 hours drive away. Gee, how much would I save, spending the gas money (and time) to drive 225-250 miles round trip?? 😕

And never buying an extended warranty and putting that cash into an interest bearing account is a sure bet. You're the house and you cannot lose.

then just use an Amex at your favorite retail store. They double the usual 1 year warranty no matter where you purchase it.

edit: and you don't have to 'ship' or take the tv anywhere. For may laptop they sent me the packaging and a pre-paid label.

Sam's Club return policy is as good as Costco's now.

You don't have a Sam's Club by you either?
Where do you live? In the woods?

Uh no.

I bought a $1900 plasma two years ago. It died. I got a $2200 LCD (after kicking in $300 of my own) in exchange for it. I did not get a comparable unit. I got a 4" larger screen, higher resolution, and two years newer technology.

And after the price guarantee of the sale price I actually got paid $50 for the new TV (less the original cost of the warranty.

Same thing applied with the camera of mine that died. The original cost of it was around $400 at the time. A little over 14 months of use it died and the Best Buy guy told me "go pick out whatever you want for $400". Not bad for a $40 warranty.

Extended warranties have saved my behind several times over.
