Was looking for a cheap acoustic for college (the class doe snot allow electric). Went to Daddy's and bought the alvarez rf8 for 179.99 w/ a case. Seemed nice at the store for the price, but when i got home i got second thoughts. I guess I need assurance. So, should i keep the guitar or return it?

I've got an Alvarez 12-string that I've been really happy with. It sold for a bit more, however, so there may be some quality variance.

Never listened to that one. Best brand new acoustic I've ever heard at that price point is the Takamine Jasmine. Other people in similar threads have said Seagull makes really good cheap acoustics too. Never heard one so I can't comment on it.

With a name like gibson one would expect him to know a little something about guitars :)

I've got an Alvarez acoustic that I picked up for about that much. I like the sound on it. Not quite sure about the model, but I will check when I get home and edit the post... Everyone that plays it says it's got a good sound for the money. I've had mine about 2 years or so and never had any problems with it! Seagulls do have a nice sound, but I believe they are a little more than that Alvarez.

sound wise, it is decent. However, you can tell it has a laminated top, but for my price range, i should not expect anything but a laminated top. I'm just not feeling it with this guitar:( I wish I had $300 to spend. The only places around here are daddy's and guitar center, but they have somewhat of a limited selection, so i want to buy it online, but it sucks since you cant play with it first.

I have an Alvarez DK60. Great guitar. I don't know about the cheaper ones. My advice is to keep that one. Learn to play on it, and when you get to the point that you are pretty confident in your playin skills, think about buying a nicer guitar. The reality is, is that with acoustic guitars, if you jump up to the $300 - $400 range, there are some really nice guitars that you wouldn't mind hanging on to for a long time.
