No, these reacks are NOT hot swapable.
 
This is hot if the shipping works out. I use the Kingwin ones mentioned and those go for $18 complete / $12 per tray. If the fan bugs you just disconnect it as the cooling is prolly nothing to worry aboot, especially if just running for an hour during cloning or such.
 
Came in the mail. Anyone know if you can buy generic trays to fit in this, or does it have to be the same brand?

I highly recommend same exact brand.

I once tried to mix-and-match two different generic racks that mechanically fit together, using the same type of centronics-ish connector that they use. Guess what? Bad Idea. I fried the rack, lucky I didn't fry the HD inside it. As it turns out, although many of these racks are similar, there is no official standardized pinout used for the centronics-ish connector. Worse yet, some of the mfgs of these racks have *patented* the pinout that they chose, in their respective countries, so that other competing mfgs *have* to use a different pinout. Between different-model racks of same mfg is most likely ok, but I would still look for confimation (listing of compatible racks/trays on the box) before actually trying it.

I wouldn't recommend that either, I think that you would be very surprised at how hot a 7200 RPM HD can get during continuous operation in an enclosed area. I very nearly cooked some of my older HDs (top of drive casing was too hot to continously touch) in under 15mins while trying that, but that was a while ago in a rack with a plastic frame and a thin metal top/bottom cover. Removing the top cover helped a little bit, but not much.

Is the fan in these, in the outer frame, or in the inner tray part?
 
Welp, these Al ones obviously transfer the heat unlike plastic but the temp can easily be monitored via SpeedFan and such so there is no guessing.

So, who is the manufacturer? Google turned up diddly definite with various references and slightly diff'rent part numbers (FarSee, Cosmotech, generic).
 
So does anyone know if you can order the tray only. I don't need 5 housings for the PC, just the trays, though at that price, might be more cost effective to go ahead and order the entire package.
 
nope, I just called pcliquidators and they are all out. I ordered 4 last week and I was about to order 4 more. They are very very nice for that price. I can't imagine a Kingwin brand being much better than this. And at $8 apiece shipped you can't go wrong. I was thinking of buying a bunch and ebaying them, but looks like that is not going to happen.

Received my 3 yesterday. The first one I tried I couldn't get to work. I figured it was me configuring it wrong (jumpers/slave or master position on the ATA cable/primary or secondary space/master or slave setting). I tried the other unit and it worked. So I examined the first tray and indeed the fan housing is cracked, and missing one of the 3 supports.

I did think when I opened the box that that one seemed to maybe have been opened before as the bubble wrap was stuffed in there and there was a few pieces of tape holding it shut. My other 2 units didn't have tape and everything was neatly in place.

I hope their return policy won't screw me on shipping now, for a damaged item.
 
Does anyone notice the aluminum cover rattles periodically?

Overall a nice unit. Very pleased with the 2 that work. The tray itself is very long so it is a bit tight in the case.

my aluminum cover fits real good, no rattles at all.
 
These are only IDE compatible. They slide into your computer's 5 1/4" slot. I bought separate Syba Platinum Aluminum HDD 3.5" enclosures (USB 2.0) last week and they ran about $18 ea. +shipping.

Why wouldn't they work? If the 5.25" case says it can handle a harddrive. than it should work just fine. There may be a problem with cooling though since the fan would be blocked inside the enclosure. But it should work.
 
Does anybody know where you can get compliant trays for these. I bought two, but now I wish I had bought 2 more just so I could have the trays.
 
Right about the shipping for only 1. I bought 3 and shipping wasn't too bad at $8.33 from CA to FL. The 1 defective rack I sent back cost me $5.84 to ship back which is almost as much as the rack itself. Now hoping they refund the original 1/3 of the shipping along with the return shipping which I know they will refund along with my $5.99. They received it yesterday and I called today and I havent heard back from them yet.
