Alton Brown, the host on Good Eats, is the man. Unlike every other TV chef, this guy actually teaches you what he's doing rather than reading a recipe to you. If you havent seen his show, make it a date OR let your TIVO know about it! I swear that if you have even the slightest interest in food (who doesn't like to eat?) you'll be inspired to jump into your kitchen and kick some ass!

I've been watching his show for quite some time now. I learn quite a lot of new things every episode, from cooking techniques to how different ingredients react to one another. It's all very interesting stuff and it's really fun to learn. Well one day I saw an episode with this recipe and all I could say was "oh my god, that's the pimpest way to make grilled cheese!". It was inspiring enough to get me up off my lazy ass from playing World of Warcraft all day to making breakfast for my girlfriend and her family. It was the first time I ever cooked something from scratch on my own and WOW (no pun intended) it felt GREAT! Ever since then I've been venturing into my kitchen almost every day to cook up newer, better things. I found a new hobby and it really makes me feel great!

^^ and I know this sounds cheesey (again, no pun intended), but it really all started with watching Good Eats. Alton Brown is the freaking man.

If you like food, even if you hate cooking, I HIGHLY recommend giving his show a shot. It's fast paced, funny, and extremely informative. Also, its a good one to watch with a girlfriend and even your whole family :)

And there's my $.02

Yeah, but when I first watch his show, he looks a little kooky.
Him in the Iron Chef America is the only saving grace for the show.

Actually Taylor in food 911 is not bad neither. I enjoy watching his show as well. Plus it's fun to watch all the women went gugugaga over him during the show.

I've cooked probably 5 or 6 if his recipes. My best accomplishment was the fruit cake. It just totally changed everyone's mind form the usual hard, tough, & neon generalization.

I am a big fan of Mr Brown. I like the way he incorporates humor, food anthropology, science, and safety into his shows. His shows are a valuable source of culinary information.

If you are ever going to do Thanksgiving diner definitely watch his Romancing the Bird show even before you buy the turkey.

I've used his turkey brine/recipe for the past several years. Turkey doesn't last very long at our house anymore. He's great.

There are times (your team just lost by a lousy field goal) when our appetites should be free to comfort us without having to bow to the culinary censorship of our consciousness. What could possibly get us through the winters of our discontent like the warm embrace of melted cheese nestled between perfectly crisped bookends of toast. Thats right: nothing.

:D

They're great, definatly pick them up. They're not your traditional cookbooks full of recipes (although there are recipes). They cover just about every technique you'd need when cooking.

The first book deals more with cooking techniques (searing, braising, etc) and the second deals with baking techniques.

yeah, I own his first book and the baking book. The third book is al about kitchen equipment and gadgets, so it's a book to get at the library and not buy.

and he'll be the first to tell you he isn't a chef. He and his wife were in production and marketing before starting the show. His show is the only show on Food Network that came to life because someone sent in their demo. He made a tape, sent it in, and the rest is history. The show was originally filmed in the producers home kitchen, but once it became a regular series, they built a reproduction on a soundstage.
