Althon recognised as a Duron?

Hi there,

I bought an Athlon 1Ghz chip with my new PC on the weekend. However when it was put into the pc and booted etc it was recognised as a Duron 700Mhz. The friend that was putting it in with me said he thought he remembered reading something about this glitch. Has anyone heard anything about this, or is it definitely a mistake by the vendor (wrong chip).

Unfortunately I was not looking when the chip was inserted into the mb when I bought it (I was grabbing another item) so we didnt check there. The chip now has a big fan over it, so looking on the chip itself is now impossible without taking it apart again.

What further confuses me is that software from my Hercules Prophet II MX recognises the chip as an Athlon.

Weird.

Right clicl on "My Computer". Then go to "properties".
Does it list it as Athlon or Duron there?

Download Wcpuid and run that or try a program like SiSoft Sandra, it'll tell u also.

when you put in in your computer, did you notice it saying Duron on the chip? DOh, just read that part. I would suggest downloading WCPUID, jsut do a search for it, I can email it to you if you can't find it.

Wsa the box opened? I know its possible that someone bought the computer, switched out the chips, and returned it. I use to work @ best buy and this happened once in a while. The reason why they would put another chip in is because if they decided to test, the computer would still function properly. If this isnt a returned/open box product, i dunno what to say!

why don't you just take off the fan and look at the chip??? If it does say Athlon, then set everything to default to see if the mobo recognizes it. If that doesn't work you can also flash the newest BIOS and see if that fixes it. Otherwise RMA if you can.

When it boots, you should get a screen right after the POST and before the windoze logo that tells you a bunch of stuff (like com ports, drives, clock speed), and somewhere there should be cache size. 128=tbird, and 64=duron.

Thanks for this - I will check it at home (at work now) I ran WCPUID and it told me it was a Duron 700. I am going to take the fan off to have a look this afternoon.

Hmmm. cache at 64. Its ok I had already convinced myself it was the wrong chip and steeled myself to have to take it back!

Now I just gotta take of the fan etc and go back to the vendor *sigh*

Will keep you posted on final developments/outcomes.
