My previous pads each had their shortcomings, like everglide having a tendency to eat through mouse feet and get warped after a while, or cshyde's c4 being not smooth enough and collecting gunk waaay too fast. For sometime I have been living without a mouse pad, which is ok but could be better.

I had done some research on mousepads a few years back, and concluded I did not like ice or steel based surfaces; my hands get very cold and sweaty while playing games, and test driving my cousin's icemat confirmed this concern.

What I had in mind after reading reviews was fUnc surface 1030 or archetype, as neither is ice / steel based, reasonably priced and offers customization (a huge plus for me). Cuztomizability alone would have won me over, but I am willing to sacrifice that if there is something newer with significantly better performance. I get a feeling that 'performance' might be a subjective term, but I just haven't kept up with new releases, maybe there is something new and hot out there. Please feel free to share your thought on that.

USED TO BE a low sensitivity player, not sure any more now

I'm not sure what you mean by ice / steel surfaces - are you referring to IceMat and Steelseries? If so, IceMats (now Steelseries Experience I-2) are made of glass, and Steelseries (the brand) mouse pads are made of various materials. The only ones that will feel cold are the glass and aluminum surfaces; they don't make any steel pads that I'm aware of (despite the name).

With that said, I'm shopping for a new surface myself. I like the smoothness that hard plastic pads offer, but I'm finding even my Steelseries SP's texture is slowly wearing out. It lasted a LOT longer than previous mouse pads, but it's still starting to get glossy. I'd love to buy a glass or aluminum surface, but I have a feeling I'll hate the cold touch. Finally, I've read several complaints about cloth pads (wrinkles, uneven, etc.)

With all of that said, my primarily choices are still Steelseries and Razer. I'm considering buying a Razer Sphex to give it a try. For my second computer (productivity) I might try Steelseries Experience I-2.

Steelseries 5L. I've had mine for about 4 years, with two of those including heavy, heavy gaming.
