Alternative Word Processor to Microsoft Word?

VinY

I saw a post here one time about a very good word processor that I'd like to use instead of Microsoft Word. Also, if there are any other spreadsheet programs that work well, I'm interested in them also. Thanks in advance.

Any others? Staroffice sounds familiar but I think the one someone posted before wasn't created by Sun...

Wordperfect and QuatroPro are alternatives to Word And Excel. I have Corel office 2000 and MS Office 2000 - i prefer MS better.

As much as people dislike MS, their Word/Excel combo is tough to beat in terms of both features and ease of use.

As to VinY's original question, Lotus 1-2-3 is a pretty good spreadsheet program that Quattro and Excel both copied off of. And the only other word processor not mentioned so far that I know of is Claris Works.

You could also try the 602 Suite or AbiWord. They're both non-Java free Word Processors (Star Office seems bulky to me). Personally though Word/Excel are great to me. I use them at work and in the school labs (use Corel WP Suite 8 at home cuz that's all I got) and they are quite nice.

I prefer corel wp2000 to word. I like the instant save feature which has saved my ass many times on 10 page papers. I think ms has implemented this feature but it has never saved correctly. I also like the borders wp has. Words borders suck.

the only word processing program I hate to use is M$ Word. it's just too bulky, and every new version of M$ suite it become more and more bloated. and they always have compatibility issues even with their own product..

I like Star Office 5.2, it's powerful, read/writes M$ format if you HAVE to deal with it (you have friends swear by them, or they don't know how to use wordpad/notepad, or what a TXT file is...) Corel WordPerfect is also a very good choice.. Lotus smartsuite cames last, since they haven't really update their product for couple years, just minor updates.

Another good thing about Star Office (made by Star Division, purchased by Sun), it supports Linux as well, and everything is free for personal use..

but most of the time I still use my trust worthy notebpad and wordpad.. simple and quick. I only fire up Star Office when I need the big gun.

I prefer WordPerfect to MS Word as well. Part of the reason is probably that I've used WordPerfect more often and it's easier for me to use, but I really think the "reveal codes" feature of WordPerfect is great because it gives you control over your document that MS Word doesn't.

I used MS office/word97 for years upgraded to 2000 dont like it. loaded
Corel wordperfect and I find it has lots of nice little features and is very intuitive. Expecially like the running theasuares in wordperfect it helps with not using the same word over and over again.

For general word processing, I still use an older version of AMIPRO. Uses about 1/4th the resources of WORD and has a much better user interface IMHO.

I don't actually find word all that great...

I use Word 97 at work and at university and Word 2000 at home because it's what I'm used to, but I really think there are better alternatives. I haven't used the newest Corel, but WordPerfect 7 or 8 spanked Word97 (and Word2000), so I'd guess WP2000 does to.

Personally if I was looking to dump Word, I'd go StarOffice, it works under Linux as well that way one day in the future when you have to let microsoft approve all your upgrades before they give you a new activation code and you move to linux that will be one less program you have to get used to.
