Alternative Shell?

So after having the windows shell crash on my for the 3 time today (networkting ftw!) I'm wondering about alternative shells.

I'm a minimalist kind of guy. I like my window managers to be like Fluxbox. Light, configurable (preferably with alpha transparency). My pipe dream is to have a real command line, too, but I realize that's a little much, seeing as I don't want to play with Cygwin.

I did a bit of googling, and all of the sites I find are circa 2004. With one updated as "Server Moved" in January of this year.

Anyone have any experience with other Window "shells?"

Note: I'm using "Shell" in the manner I've always heard it used with windows, it's the actual GUI interface, basically.

There was a guy running an alternative windows manager in XP but he's no longer here and I can't remember the name of it. If I can think of it I'll edit this.
