Altec Lansing ACS48 vs. Logitech Z540

I was wondering which one sounds better, I currently have the ACS48 and I can pick up the z540s for $45 shipped and I was wondering if it was worth the $$.

Altec Lansing has been in theater/pro/home speaker business since 1920s.
I remember during the 80s their first THX home system cost around $50K in compare to Infiniti's Twin tower.

Anyway, I figure their PC speakers division shouldn't be that bad, no?

I have AL ACS 54s and 56s and they rock. I am seriously thinking of taking a PC with DVD and Audigy with the 56s and set them up in the living room hooked to the TV for home theater. The surroundsound is pretty powerful in my office set up. I am only looking to upgrade if it can be proven the need for quality above these standards exist. I get the highs and deep base andthe softness of a fine violin playing descretely in the background and can pick out every note.

The Z540's wouldn?t stand a chance against the Altec's, the ACS48's are in a different class altogether then the Z560, just look at the specs.

Uhmm, are you sure you don't have it the other way around?

The ACS48's are a 2.1 system, and was the best 2.1 out there for a long time.
Only recently, Klipsch's 2.1 system dethroned it.

The Z540's and Z560's are 4.1 systems.
The Z540's compare to the Altec ACS54/56's, while the Z560's compare to the Altec 4100's or 641's.

The ACS48's and Z540's are in a different class (2.1 vs 4.1), and are hard to compare.
IMO, the ACS48's will sound better than the 540's if compared for sound quality only (I hear they have very good bass).
For gaming, the Z540's are obviously better.
The 560's will blow them both away in all aspects.

Nah, I had it the right way around. When I'm comparing a set of speakers 90% of that comparison is going to be sound quality, surround sound and everything else takes a distant 2nd.

I had the ACS48's before I upgraded to the Z560's and the Altec's where a very nice set of 2.1's easily the best of their time. Sound quality wise I would compare the ACS48's to the Z560's not the Z540's.
