FYI, you can find this price at other online vendors (given not shipped). These may be perfect for some people, but just thought I'd let ya know they are the low end of Altec's line. You get what you pay for in this case.

I'm thinking of buying this (mainly to use to listen to MP3s and not too much on-line gaming).. anyone know how I can determine whether my laptop has 5 speaker support?

I would suggest that any sound card with support for 5.1 would have a configuration program that is installed with the drivers. This would probably be put under the start menu, although you may also be able to get to some of the options by going to the device's properties in Device Manager.

IIRC those altec speakers were also around $35. Seems they're bumping them up a little to compensate for the free shipping.

These speakers generally come for that price anyways... newegg has a similar deal except without free shipping...Link. I would spend a few 20-30 bucks and get some better speakers since those are a bit older.
