Alta Vista Halts Free ISP Service :(

This just popped up on my screen. 🙁

Shazbot!!! My main ISP is AT&T, but they bog down during the children's hours (5 p.m. - 10 p.m.). During those hours, I could live with the banners, because Alta Vista was much faster than either AT&T or what I saw on my friends' Earthlink accounts (real slugs at night).

Here's what they wrote:

Dear Member:

We regret to inform you that AltaVista?s free Internet access will terminate service on December 10th. AltaVista has been forced to discontinue this offering because the company who provided the service and telecommunications infrastructure for it, 1stUp Corp., is going out of business. This change will not affect the availability of our search services at AltaVista.com.

Anybody not powered by 1stUp? (the people behind Altavista Free Access) other than NetZero?

I guess NetZero will be getting many more subscribers nowadays.

At least you had a free service from Altavista. Here in the UK, they advertised it extensively, sent out loads of emails telling people who had pre-registered how wonderful it would be and..........................................................

Nothing. They dropped it before it had even started. Great... :-(

Dah altavista sucked. It was the first FreeISP I tried. Try Onfree, or WebFlyer, or Netzero(bannerless? :Q😉)

Deeko, not sure when you were on altavista but a few months back they dropped the "life meter" and became much better. I'll miss it, since I just went broadband, I saw it as a viable alternative if @home got to be to expensive. Anyone know about the free altavista email, does it go with the ISP?

I've still got my Altavista email address. They'd better not cancel them, it's the address I'm using for the forums here...what would happen if they removed it?

Yah, anyone not powered by 1stUp? The Cable provider in my area has a bad rep and DSL has a huge waiting list and is iffy in my locale.
