Windows ME was running perfectly. My system was starting up quick, and some of Me's options were amazing. I was had fun until i installed Half life w/ Counter Strike. I tried to connect to a game, and boom, my modem disconnects. after a few million tries, i begin to mumble to myself "OH HELLLSSS NOO!!" i knew what i had to do.

Sooo. win 98 se is running fine right now, and counter-strike works again. but goddamnit, i want my 30 secs boot times back!!

i only have 128 megs of ram right now, i remember people saying that win2k eats up ram. i would love to add another 128, but my globalwin heatsink is blocking 3 out of 4 of my ram slots.

-edit- either i could add another stick of ram, or i could TRY to trade my pc100 stick (with extra cash) for a 256 pc133 stick. trading for that would be pretty difficult.

Win2k's memory management is a lot more efficient than Win9x. 128Megs is considered a "starting point" for memory 🙂 It just likes more RAM, but it works well with what is available.

If you want more ram then the only best thing to do is trade in or sell your old stick, which if you find a gulible enough person to sell it to you will get quite abit of money back to use towards your 256MB ram. Also ram prices are dropping like stones latly so Ram is the best value for money product right now on the market.

Good Luck,

I run my system constantly (weeks on end) with 256mb pc133 and windows me. I have NEVER EVER had a problem with me, haven't had a blue screen of death since I've installed it, and it's the most stable windows product I've ever used (as stable as you can get windows 🙂). and yes, I even run counter strike 🙂

heck I can't wait until I get my tbird 900, then we'll see how fast me can REALLY boot up!

WinME stability varies from machine to machine. Win2k is stable no matter what machine you run it on (if it meets the system requirements 😉).

Yes W2K is stable and all that, but it is really slow OS. Loading up big programs just take much longer with it then win98se or winme. I have tryed Win me also fast but for some reasons it was not stable in games. I run my win98se 24/7 and just reboot when I need to (driver installs etc). And I newer had a blue screen on it (since my last clean install 3 months). If I remember correctly w2k was not great at running games like Half life.

"WinME stability varies from machine to machine. Win2k is stable no matter what machine you run it on "

Yes true and what kind of programs you run on your os.. When I first tryed to get my w2k to work I can't remember how much bul#¤ ICQ2000 gave me!

Do you have Mcaffee Virus Scan installed?
It caused my modem to disconnect all the time under Win ME.

If so, try uninstalling Virus Scan and see if your modem still disconnects.

When i used ME it would disconnect me from the net also, but on an ethernet connection and not dialup....my nic would simply stop responding until the next reboot.
