Honestly, as anyone should've seen from the trailer, this movie is about a bunch of bada$$ Spartans (the other Greeks were pvssies until the end IMO) beating the crap out of a lot of not-so-bada$$ Persians. It didn't even pretend to be historically accurate (although I know for a fact that the phalanx tactics were dead on).

you were there? pics?

The movie gets on my nerves. They say this is the future of movies. I hope they are wrong.

Stop with the slow motion! Stop with the filter effects! Stop making every single scene "over the top"!

I don't really follow the entertainment media much but I think it's fair to say that 300 was hyped most by the movie-going masses (people who were impressed by the trailer/people who watched it and loved it) and not the studio themselves. Can't complain about that kind of hype.

It is a solid action movie with heroism and patriotism as its central themes. The king is not a pussy watching the battle from a hill top 3 miles away - he's actually at the front line, one of the first to strike. The part where the King goes berserk in one of the most impressive slow-motion sequences I've ever seen is cinematic genius. All hail the King! And the Queen too!

It's over-the-top on purpose. Sure, it's ultra-stylized and slick like a music video - but it's not by accident. I can understand if someone is easily offended/upset by gore and violence - if you hate the movie for those reasons, you're excused. Otherwise, I see little fault in the movie. The battle sequences are grittier and much more satisfying than what we'd seen in Troy, Alexander etc.

GO SPARTA!

There's a good book about Ancient Greek warfare called The Western Way of War by Victor Davis Hanson. I'm not sure some of his historical leaps are supportable, and his politics get into his conclusions, but his scholarship on phalanx combat is top notch.

And yes it had a few cheesy (albeit bada$$) lines about freedom and what-not.

Still, unless your completely turned off by CG tits and violence, what's not to like?

And don't say Anti-religious themes. If you're so religious that you can't enjoy a movie over it, you need to get a life or some spiritual security. Or both.

ps i am student of ancient greek history so i know i'll hate the movie.

Everyone knows the Persians look like the Strogg from Quake. Just go to the West LA area and see for yourself. :p

First off, a lot of the movie WAS historically accurate - just spruced up for good measure.

I loved the movie, and have watched the movie already a few times. I gave it a 10/10 on IMDB so......

I read and own it along a couple of his other books.

My take:
General story is in line with history.
Fighting techniques/phalanx is WAY off. Greeks were piss poor duel fighters (which was most of the fighting in the movie) and strictly group fighters. Phalanxs consisted of extremely tightly packed and heavily armored men (8-12 rows deep). Each hoplite had 50-60lbs of armor counting their ~17lb shield; which means a lot seeing the average Greeks was about 5'2" and 130-150lbs. The soldiers had swords but only used them as a LAST resort(i.e. both spear tips broke); 6-8' spear has a better reach and more stabbing power than a short sword--also the shield limited the effectiveness of the sword in tight formations. Finally, where were the flutes for the Spartans to march to.
Movie was good though; showing the real battle would be too difficult--I think it would be impossibe to have an accurate phalanx, without injuries to the actors/stuntmen, shown for any period of time. The movie Alexander shows the Macedonian phalanx pretty well and you see how compact and armored they were.

I wish they would make a historically accurate movie about the two Greek-Persian wars; that would be something to see. The fate of all democracy in the hands of citizen soldiers against the world's largest empire.

you never mentioned anything about a story being necessary in enjoying a movie. So...I'll go with that: lack of story. yeah, yeah, I'll see it sometime, but as all of the homoerotic lusting towards this movie in these forums has focused on the action and badassness of this flick, and whether or not it's accurate, I'll go with what seems to be a poorly-presented plot. compare with Braveheart, I guess. that's what I'm talking about.

The plot of the movie is badassness. It's much easier to show badassness than to talk about it.
