I know you could in Phoenix, but is this the case everywhere?

Just trying to avoid salespeople.

we do it all the time. they do keep the lots brightly lit. you can't look inside that well, but no salesmen coming up to you is great.

My wife and I used to do this on Sunday because we didn't want to be bothered by pushy salepersons.

I do it all the time too, but sometimes the security guys come over and ask us to leave...

I wouldn't do it around Midnight no.... ;)

But say like an hour or so after the lot closes would be fine.

My wife and I do it too. Same reasons as stated above. I get quickly angered at the sales people practically intercepting us as soon as our car is on the lot, still moving or not.
I had one moron at a Saturn dealership spot us on our way in, so he felt it necessary to come hover around the car no more than a few feet away after I parked, waiting for us to get out. I just started the car back up and left.

Its trespassing.

Also, any adult should have figured out by now how to handle a salesperson so you can look at cars during the day without people bothering you.

That is what I thought because you might find something you like and come back when they open to negotiate.

shouldn't be a problem, if someone questions you just tell them the truth, they'll leave you alone

Right, but its not the people from the dealership questioning you. Its the police looking for a bust that stop when they see you wandering around a lot after hours :)

Based on the other responses in the thread, are you a minority? :p

I do this like every week.......it never occured to me that some people might be weary of going to a dealership after hours...

I do it all the time. A cop once stopped and asked me what I was doing, I told the truth and he didn't give me any problems.

This probably depends on where you live really, cops driving by will question you in my area. None of the car lots appear to have much for security people or equipment either.

My parents always did it when they bought cars, and I saw my first car wandering around with my mom after hours. I really don't think they care.

Local laws here state you may be on a lot until midnight. After midnight you are fair game for trespassing. There are signs at the entrance to our dealerships stating this as well.
