The 'fact of the matter' is the suitability of our planet as a habitat for people is degrading over time, and we are making it happen.
That is FAAAR from a fact. The holding capacity of this planet has done nothing but rise EXPONENTIALLY since the dark ages (and continues to do so). And the air and water quality of this country has increase steadily over the last 100 years. now, nobody is saying that can last forever (that's a mathematical impossibility), but at the same time there is no evidence to suggest this capacity is going down. Even in very polluted countries like average lifespan is increasing considerably. The reason being pretty much what I said before. For every person killed by industrial pollution, 100 can be saved by the fruits of that industry. Nobody is saying this is a perfect outcome (far from it), but TBH its the best we got at this time.
Also, people need to at least acknowledge some of the advances here, the modern coal plants produce 90% less harmful emissions and 40% less CO2 than the last generation (or the ones being built in China for example). An interesting statistic for example is that we could meet our Kyoto goals imply by replacing every old coal plant with a new coal plant. however in reality what people want is FAAR worse, they want all those coal plants replaced with wind and solar which is 2-10 times as expensive.
