I decided to gen the Pink Zen Micro with a 3 year extended warranty for about $240 shipped. I think that should suit her well, 5Gigs is a lot of space for music and should easily handle her whole collection. I think this is a nice gift for her, i hear her mention MP3 players to me all the time. Now when she is in the library or whatever, she can listen to all her music.

Thanks for all the help guys!

**UPDATE**

I ended up getting a pink Zen Micro, and she loved it. She loved it so much that....well, you know the rest ;)

 thanks for the help guys

i know for a fact she doesnt want an Ipod. She said her friends have them and they are always breaking down. Also, thats only 4Gb, and i can get a 20-30Gb for the same price..

what is the difference between the above linked model and This? How come this one is a 30Gb as opposed to 20, yet its cheaper?

The 30GB one is pretty big...about the size of a cassette player I heard.

I know the Dell DJ recently got some good reviews. I found them particularly attractive in that they found the Dell proudect to be well built and lacking the frills of many other players. The link is right to Dell's website but if you browse around even Dell will give you better deals than what they are listing there. I've seen the 30GB one go for 230 from Dell and the 20GB for 200 even.

(Answer to edit question)
The first one is a newer purtier zen touch (touch pad interface) as to where the second one is an older, bigger zen xtra(standard button interface), with a higher capacity.

nick, i just bought my wife the IRIVER iFP-895 it is only 512mb but it holds about 17hours of music!!!! why get anything bigger? i got it for 132.00 at best buy and i got a pair of really nice sony earbuds model MDA-EX51LP with 3 sizes of plugs to fit everybodys ears:) and they dont fall out of your ears....she uses it for excercising, newegg has it for 113.00 but i didnt want to wait....it sounds fabulous....but ditch the supplied ear buds, they suck......its easy drag and drop loading, you can make folders on it for your tunes it plays mp3,wma,oog.....it also will record off of its own built in radio....and also works as a voice recorder.....easy to use...very easy! I am buying one for myself next week!

I have the 5GB Iriver H10 and like it. Sound quality is excellent. Creative Zen Micro is nice too. Ipods are popular but don't know much about them. The touch wheel on the Ipods are said to be really easy to use. Best of luck. ;)

what about flash MP3 players?
I have an ipod 30gig but found it annoyingly bulky (I know its not much but still I like tiny flash devices especially when skating/jogging/biking).
I am always near a laptop or something I can change the music quickly to anyways. 1gig is more then enough music to get me through a day or 2 if not longer.
I bought a sandisk 1gig MP3 player as a supplement (had to be OS X and win XP compatible, work with Itunes and not proprietary ala sony, and tiny, USB2, and preferably cheap)

It's $120 at the egg (I paid $150ish at a local best buy near my office)
BTW the provided ear buds suck IMO. I use these Sony's which are one of the best for the price range.

Inner ear though, some people do not like that.

While it's not the best MP3 ever, I am really happy with it for my basic needs. The menu is really klunky compared to my ipod but still for what it is, it works well. The basic controls are good IMO for such a tiny package. Actually I hated the menu orientation at first but found it can be flipped which made me alot happier. Also, although it cant read itunes playlists, I can drag and drop songs from both windows and mac itunes. I just make playlists in itunes and drag them all at once into the MP3 player. Works great. Also accepts normal files too (system mounts like a removable HD)

Again, not saying it's the best, just saying keep your options open to flash devices too. Some major things to think about:
Song selection, qty - You GF randomly likes a huge selection at her fingertips. It's better if she is someone who listens to a album or playlist through. If she is one of those constantly reading the library to pick song by song then large MP3 player all the way.
Mac/PC compatible - if that is a concern at all. Alot of the creative stuff is not mac compatible which really pissed me off.
Uses - if she wants to jog or something with it, flash technology is better. Lighter and no skip.
Power - If she isn't very good about charging stuff or prone to take this on long outtings (6+ hours) you may want something that takes regular batteries/rechargables instead of a fixed rechargable battery. None of the fixed battery systems last that long before they recharging, especially after 9-12 month.

Anyways I know time is ticking but remember who and why and what. Also on a personal note, I hope you are taking her to dinner/night out or something too. Techno gifts arent so romantic for annaversary... Better saved for B-days, Xmas IMO. -just my personal opinion.

I have the Sandisk 1GB. It's really tiny, about the length of a pack of gum, but fatter. You really do need to read the instructions booklet thoroughly to figure out how to use it (Sandisk after all specializes in flash storage, not user interfaces :frown: ). But after that, it's pretty nice. Comes with a stretchy velcro armband for exercising. I didn't think the earbuds were as bad as dakels did. If you put on the foam pads that come with the MP3 player, they stay in your ears pretty well. The nicest thing is you know that it doubles as a reliable usb thumb drive. Just be prepared for a learning curve if you get the GF this one...
eBuyer.com has it for about $115 shipped.

My beef with the sandisk provided earbuds is that the sound quality is mediocre, but what bothered me the most is they hurt my ears after a while (hours). I really jam them in my ears too though so that doesnt help. I am used to inner ear plugs because

A: they generally have better acoustics
B: deeper clearer bass
C: Drown out ambient noise which is important for me using them in NYC/subway.

Alot of it comes down to preference. Some people are very uncomfortable with inner ear designs (I was too but got used to it). Also inner ear designs block out ambient noise which is good or bad depending on your need.

I agree the menu system was a bit confusing at first. Now it's second nature for the most part. I do not like the way the menu navigates to other folders of music though. I find that taxing and slow.

BTW word to the wise, clean up music formats before copying to MP3 player. Thats really the case with many MP3 players though. They don't read formats as well as your computer and there is no need for bulky 300kbps bit rates bloating the drive (although with a hard drive MP3 it's not a concern as much).

The sandisk also get great battery life and uses any type of AAA battery, rechargable or not. I find 1 battery goes around 20 hours for me. And when that's done I keep an extra AAA in my bag always. Also, although the menu system may be confusing at first, using it is not. It plugged into my macs and PC's without any problems or software.

Erm...if you're still looking, iRiver has a 20GB player with a full-color screen for the same price on Newegg. I think it plays movies too.
