My ThinkPad's onboard AC97 does fine playing CD's and MP3's through my Altec Lansing 2.1 speaker setup. I do notice a bit of clipping in games, but not enough to really annoy me. On board sound is adequate, nothing to write home about, but nothing to really complain about either.

I didn't really notice a difference between the onboard Creative/ENSONIQ Audio PCI AC97 onboard sound on my old Gateway mobo compared to my SB Live X-Gamer card and my Diamond Monster Sound MX400 card. The Live and MX400 sounded only slightly better in regular stuff like winamp. It would be nice to have though in case something happens to my sound card. Just like I hardly ever use the onboard video on my Asus CUSL2 mobo, but if I ever have problems w/my vid card I can still use the onboard as a back up. Too bad my CUSL2 doesn't have onboard sound.
