Alright, I give. I'm thinking of getting WoW.

Ya, ya, I know there have been enough of threads like this one, but everyone's situation is different, eh? I first started thinking of hopping in when it was first released, because of the immense and great reviews it was getting. I eventually talked myself out of it because I didn't want to take the time to play it.

Just last week, my brother built a new system, and has been trying to talk me into getting it with him so we can try it out. I think this morning I've finally turned the tide, and have decided to get it. Keep in mind neither of us have ever played a MMORPG (we played Planetside together and had a blast though).

1.) What do the 2 of us need to know in order to have a good time playing together?
2.) Are there any particular servers we should join? We won't be playing every single night like most, so I didn't know if there were any servers that would cater to our playing style. We certainly don't want a PvP server, but I'm sure I've read that's not implemented yet.
3.) Do we need to be of the same race/faction in order to play together?
4.) How long does it actually take to get started to where you actually know what you're doing?
5.) How helpful is the manual in getting started?

I think my plan right now is to go ahead and get the game, use the next couple of days for it to update (I've read of the slow updating problems), and then we get started this weekend.

I appreciate the info, and sorry for another thread like this. We are just looking to have some fun together, and figure WoW is our choice for the moment.

2. Join a low pop server. You guys sound like you would be better off on a normal server rather than a PvP.
3. You have to be on the same faction to even talk to one another, factions cannot talk, trade, etc.
4. About a day
5. Meh

1) its pretty hard NOT to have a good time
2) dont pick a high pop server. i recommend you go to blizz site and see what the newest realms are (check the news section i think). the characters there wont have had as much time to level so there may be more closer to you
3) same faction, yes, same race, no. though, ifyou pick different races you will most likely start in different locations. if you dont know your way around it may be hard to meet up at early levels, tho if you know what you are doing you can take your lvl 1 to any of the starting spots...
4) took me a day or so (first mmorpg as well)
5) who reads the manual?

1) Just get on a medium pop server and start cranking out the quests. Low pop might not have enough people for you to find groups later in the game. High pop servers will likely have lag and queue login issues...
2) You might want to join the group of Anandtech players who started a guild. I don't recall what server, but it would be a good idea to join a guild of helpful players.
3) Yes, be the same faction. Best if you are same race also so you start together right away. For Horde, the Trolls and Orcs start in the same spot. Tauren and Undead are a bit far away and require a long run to meet up. I think for the Alliance the dwarves and gnomes start in the same spot.
4) shouldn't take too long if you play a lot of computer games. The early quests through level 10 will get you started pretty easily.
5) Manual sucks. You're better off searching the web for guides and such.

Enjoy the amazingly thrilling six months where you're consumed by this game and then the crushing sensation of realizing you've become absolutely bored with the game and are merely playing out of habit and spent an enormous amount of time for something that was, in the end, utterly fruitless. Don't buy into the hype.

No MMO right now is worth your time. Trust me as a wise old MMO veteran with 10X more experience than these fanblizzles.

How about play the game till it's not fun anymore. Even if you enjoy it for 6 months and quit, it's time well spent isn't it?

1.) What do the 2 of us need to know in order to have a good time playing together?

How to use a keyboard and mouse.

2.) Are there any particular servers we should join? We won't be playing every single night like most, so I didn't know if there were any servers that would cater to our playing style. We certainly don't want a PvP server, but I'm sure I've read that's not implemented yet.

If you join the medium population BRONZEBEARD realm you can join the ATOT guild - The Knights of Nef

3.) Do we need to be of the same race/faction in order to play together?

Yes if you are interested in the aforementioned guild, join the Alliance. Ohterwise be an ugly troll for all I care... 😛

4.) How long does it actually take to get started to where you actually know what you're doing?

Not as long as it takes to get addicted

5.) How helpful is the manual in getting started?

There is one?

The manual is pretty helpful, however I didn't read it until after I had been playing for a few hours....and I only read it because I was at work and I had nothing better to do on break. There is a tutorial in the game. Basically anytime you do something new an exclamation mark will show up on your screen and give you some information. The learning curve is pretty small for the basics of the game.
