I am building a system out of spare parts i have lying around, it would be helpful if you could post some suggestions about what to get. Here is what i have so far.

1. Case with 250W PS
2. 233MHz Pentium 2
3. 10 gig HD
4. 33.6 winmodem

So I need a MB, Vid card, RAM, Cd-ROM, floppy, sound card, network card, monitor.
I would like to keep everything but the monitor under 400 dollars if possible.

Thanks for your help

you're working in US dollars correct?

either a Voodoo Banshee, or Voodoo 3, or TNT2 would be a good video card for that kind of computer. a Banshee would be a little low on power. a Voodoo 3/TNT2 would be great, and would scale if you ever upgraded your CPU.

what type of case is it? ATX, or AT?

you can get a decent BX board, so you can upgrade that CPU later on.

64 megs SDRAM, or more. the more u get now, the less you'll have to spend later. I'm betting SDRAM prices won't get this low any time soon.

soundcard.. SBLive Value OEM or something like that..
a NIC can run you any where from $10 to $50..

soo... assuming american dollars..

Voodoo 3 2K AGP, for ~$100 (probably less), some BX mobo for ~120, 64 megs PC100 SDRAM ~$60, SBLive ~$60

those are general prices. I'm not really calculating the prices, I'm basing them on what they are here in Canada, and reducing them a bit.

ie, a V3 2K AGP can go for about $100-150.. BX mobos go for ~$150+
64 megs PC100 is about $80, SBLive retail is about $80..

My nickels worth..
Since the CPU's are cheap, And if your case is ATX then..(toss the 233 Inhell or sell it)
go with the Thunderbird 700 and mother board combo with Built in sound and network - $258
128 133mhz ram - $52
VOODOO3 3000 16MB AGP 166MHZ SDRAM - $68
56x ide cd rom Accu drive retail, 1 year warranty - $28
Floppy drive - any local store for $20 or less

Please check Pricewatch for the latest prices
And this will run on a 250 watt supply.
And you have 4 times the machine, It will also use the latest Dimms.
