What's to explain? Print it off and see that it's true. The red piece is longer and higher, then the dark green triangle.

I have seen this before, something about the sides being bigger on the second one.

It looks like the slopes of the triangles are not the same, i.e. one is a triangle with leg lengths 2 and 5, and the other has leg lengths of 3 and 8. The top picture has a bit of a dip to it due to the unequal slops. The bottom triangle has a bit of a bulge to it. In order to "make up" for that extra area, the piece on the bottom is missing.

Q to the mother freakin' E to the mother freakin' D.

I superimposed the triangles over each other in Paint. They're the same size.

I also superimposed each individual component piece over each other one. Same size.

Then I cut up the top on in Paint and made the bottom shape. It worked.

AAAAIEEEEE

*edit*
ah, okay. :)

No, because I just drew the large triangle, and the dimensions work. I drew a 13x5 triangle, and superimposed it over both the triangles. The hypotenuse is a straight line.

*edit*
Play with it if you like
I drew the outline first (copied the grid, and then drew a 13x5 triangle first, using the straight line tool).

The top triangle is not a triangle. Look at the hypotenuse, it isn't straight, it is concave. Put a straight edge on it.

The bottom triangle is not a triangle either but now the hypotenuse is convex, since the red and green triangles are now reversed.

The slopes of both triangles is not the same. If you look at the second triangle you can clearly see a "bump" where the red and green mini-triangles merge.
