im considering these 2 heatsinks what do you think. i will be getting a ys-tech fan due to the fact that i will need to be sleeping near this thing.

Well for the price, go for the Alpha, its performs almost as good.
As for the hedge being loud, just get the Sunon fan instead and replace it with a Y.S tech. however the price is very hefty since you can practically buy 2 alpha's with the amount your spending.

I,m running an alpha with the ystech fan and artic silver. temps are 30/42 in an addtronics case,t-bird 850@1.0. Very happy with the setup.

The Hedgehog is sexier, the Alpha is as efficient and less expensive. If you have a plexiglass side panel, go with the hedgehog. If not, go with the Alpha.

Go for the Aplha, its pricy! I got mine two days ago, I polished those feets of a bit (to get the PERFECT contact with the core, added som cheap goop and put an slow spinning 6x6 cm Paps (19db) on top of it. I am now running my p3-700 @ 933 (1,8V) at 25*C (IDLE) and 35-38*C (heavy stress). My Antec with 4 case fans is also doing a good work (MB-temp 23-25) to keep the temp down. Get Alpha or a Hedgehog BUT remember, BE CAREFUL TO GET THE PERFEKT CONTAKT BETWEEN SINK AND CORE.

Let me throw another variable at you here. I just came across this product called MC462 from a company called Swiftech. It seems to be a new product. Their older product won Tom Pabst shootout of Socket A coolers.

This product seems to be 2 steps ahead of the other one, in that the base is all copper, it looks really huge, and is probably the cause of just the heatsink without fan to be 560g, which is over 1lb. The heatsink seems to be bigger than the socket, big enough to require 80 mm fans, with wich you can get better performance at cost of less noise (based on the fan in use).

I wish someone (Anand and the team) would review this product. In fact I am going to e-mail them, to suggest they review it.

BTW, I was also deciding between Alpha and Hedgehog, when I came across their website. I am in the planning stages to build a new Socket A Athlon based system.

If you're using these heatsinks for a Duron, why not get a faster version of it since some of these heatsinks cost even more than the CPU. Kinda makes overclocking pointless in that sense.

I am planning on getting Thunderbird or Palomino.

Why would I get a slower fan? I think you can get same cooling performance from very high quality heatsink and slower fan as with cheaperer heatsink and very fast fan. The difference is that in the first case, your computer is quiet, and in the other, it is very noisy.

Noise becoming more and more important to me, since my wife is constantly complaining about it, and several people that I was on the phone with asked about the noise in the background.

In case of that newest swiftech heatsink with 80 mm fan, you can get a lot of air flow even with quiet fans.

im choosing for my k63+ 450 @577. i want to get it up to 630 or 660 AND i want to be able to use the heatsink on my next processor (mabey a 1ghz duron or tbird or somthing like that) but well before i upgrade i have to

a) sleep near it
b) play DVDs on it using the tv out on my geforce2 mx (when i can afford a DVD rom)

so thats why i need quiet
