Alpha and Golden Orb questions

I'm setting up a PIII 700e with a Asus CUSL2 that I plan to overclock. I don't plan to push my limits too much, but am shooting for 933+. It seems that the Alpha PAL35t and the Golden Orbs are the coolers of choice. A couple of questions:

1) If I'm not going to push my limits, would it make a difference if I went for the Gorb (cheaper) over the alpha?

2) How difficult is the Alpha to install? I have never installed an after-market cpu cooler.

3) How noisy are these coolers? Is one noisier than the other?

4) How much better a cooler is the Alpha than the Gorb?

5) Has anyone had success hitting 933 with the stock HSF? How bad an idea would that be?

Any input would be appreciated.

I can't tell you anything else than that the Alpha was very easy for me to install. If you're buying the Alpha equipped w/the new clip, it bends very easy and the hook and the end of the clip can rotate in 360 angle, so you won't have to exert much energy hooking it onto the socket.

Let me give a shot:

1)There is a difference between the Alpha and the Gorb, you will probably get to the same speed with both coolers but an Alpha will keep the speed there at lower temperature, which helps stability.

2)Alpha is easy to install, Gorb is a little scary when you install it for the first time.

3)Alpha noise is depended on the fan you get with it. The Gorb generates around 28dBA so that's considered quiet. (whisper=23dBA)

4)In my opinion it's 50% better overall, but unfortunately the price is 100% more...

5)You may hit 933 with stock HSF, but I think its an bad idea.

Thanks for the info, guys. I ordered the PAL35t kit with Sunon fan from coolerguys last night. Figured I'd spend a little more in hopes of improving my chances to hit 933+.

Now, I just have to wait for it to get here... :(

I've had the golden orb for a few months. It's a good cooler for the money, but whenever I push my CPU to over 945mhz I get random freeze on W2K.
So I got a brand new Alpha 35t, and right now my CPU running great at 980mhz. According to the temperature reading in the BIOS, it says 35C.
Ok...here's the real tip from my own experience.

Golden Orb

The socket on CUSL2 is a bit odd. It's actually larger than others, that I had to bend (spread out) both sides of the clip to fit it on. Other than that the installing the Orb was a piece of cake. Just make sure, you work the mechanizm a few times with your hands.

Alpha 35t

I had a hell of time with this s.o.b. The first problem I faced was with the clip. There's not enough room to work with. The resistors on CUSL2 are too close to the socket! Be very careful. If possible take off the memory modules to give yourself more room.
The second problem, this is one is a killer! Those 4 plastic feet are too thick! Because of them the CPU doesn come into contact with the heatsink. Solution? Make it thinner by lapping them on a sandpaper. First cover the copper portion of the heatsink for protection then lap it in nice circular motion. How much? Just enough so that the thermal compound on the CPU is stamped "evenly" on the heatsink.

Good Luck!

hue, it's hard to install the alpha pal35t! i hurt my hand, the clip is very hard to push! for me more easy to install alpha then golden orb!)

3)How noisy are these coolers? Is one noisier than the other?
hehehe, i get 38cfm alpha pal35t from 2cooltek and it's very noisy :p

4) How much better a cooler is the Alpha than the Gorb?
my cpu temperature drop alot! before that i use golden orb! and the full load temp when run seti is 35c since i use alpha the cpu drop into 22 for full load!

5) Has anyone had success hitting 933 with the stock HSF? How bad an idea would that be?

i got the bad chip one! with golden orb i can get 882, i hope i can push more when i use alpha, however it's still the same :(
