Alpha 8045... What is the silver thing for?

What is the silver thing that goes between the heatsink and the fan for? I disassembled my system, and put it back together. Unfortunatley, I forgot to put the silver thing back in. However, it does appear that my temps are 1-2C lower. I really don't feel like taking my motherboard out to put this thing back in. What will happen if I leave it out?

PS... Yes I know you don't have to remove the heatsink to remove the fan, but I have to remove the motherboard since my case blocks fan screws on the top.

It's just to help the fan mount I think. I took mine off when I put an adapter for a 92mm fan on. No problems here.

its helps airflow by focusing the air being sucked into the HS down towards the bottom of the pins. Without it, air would be sucked into the HS from primarily the tops of the fins, closest to the fan. With it, the airflow is more concentrated, and closer to the CPU. I used electrical tape myself to increase the size of the shroud, and saw a 2 degree decrease in temps. There is now only about 1/2" left for the air to flow through.

It is a shroud to funnel the wind through the pins. Since Alpha includes it I figure they have determined that it is worth the extra cost to them for the increased cooling it provides or else it would not be included in the set.

I take it that you mean the shroud that mounts between the sink and fan? It does two things- 1. forces airflow further into the sink, particularly when the fan is installed so as to exhaust away from the sink- standard with Alphas. 2. acts as a spacer to keep you from driving the fan mount screws into the mobo, not a good thing at all.... it may not be possible with a 8045, but it definitely is with a 6035....

All these replies refer to the fan blowing down the heatsink, but in other threads that I have read I thought the best performance gained was from the fan sucking the air out of the heatsink... What's the best?

I got better results by having the fan suck from the heatsink. So I don't think that shroud makes a difference. I was not able to use it with my adapter. My temps stayed the same with the bigger fan but I was able to lower the speed making it more quiet.

i dont even own the heatsink yet i know more about this than you guys??😕😉

the fan is supposed to suck upwards, and the shroud improves performance in that scenario. of course your mileage may vary but alpha obviously thinks that this is the best setup and the reviews i've read confirm it.
