This is step #2 in the Application Instructions for Artic silver II:link

2. ONLY Arctic Silver II should be between the processor core and the heatsink.
Remove any thermal pads or other interface material from the heatsink before applying the Arctic Silver.
Never use any oil or petroleum based cleaners (WD-40, citrus based cleaners and many automotive degreasers) on the base of a heatsink. The oil, which is engineered to not evaporate, will fill in the microscopic valleys in the metal and significantly reduce the effectiveness of any subsequently applied thermal compound.
If your heatsink has a thermal 'pad' mounted on it, this pad must be removed before using Arctic Silver II. Thermal pads are made with paraffin wax that melts once it gets hot. When it melts, it will fill in the microscopic valleys in the heatsink with wax. To minimize the permanent contamination of the mounting surface with wax, the thermal pad should be removed before it is used and melted. Never use heat or hot water to remove the pad, the heat will melt the wax into the heatsink.

I don't understand this is. I have to remove the thermal pad (gold color pad underneath the Alpha 8045)? It's a pain trying to take it off. Anyone here uses the Alpha 8045 and the artic silver II? Tell me what did you guys do. Did you take the pad off or just leave it. If you did leave it, do you have any problem now?

Thank you

What kind of pad does hte 8045 come with? Are you referring to the copper base? I do not believe it comes with a pre-attached Pad or any pre-applied grease.

You should never mix two thermal compounds of any type... that will lead to vastly diminished performance.

Um, mine didnt come with any. I hope you arent trying to take the copper insert out of there. You will have a real tough time. I believe it is fused on there somehow. If you do manage to get it off by some miracle, you will have ruinged your PAL.

Thermal pads are usually white 1" square pads. They are glued on the bottom of the metal.
If it's metal it is NOT a thermal pad.

Dude... Alpha 8045s don't come with any Thermal Pads.
Don't even think about removing the copper at the bottom.. or you gonna loose your money. :D

Where is the clip to hold this damn Heatsink on the motherboard! I cant get it to stay on. I thought it was supposed to be magnetic! ;):);)

Perhaps he doesnt have the right Alpha, or maybe not an Alpha all together.

Hey SpeedTester, are you saying you found the magnet for yours? I thought it was an electromagnet powered through the fan leads.

Just be sure to follow the rest of the instructions closely, since there is not a pad.

Oh, and don't forget to use the screws and tighten them as per install sheet because the magnet just does'nt work. :)

LOL :D Really brightened my day ;) How can you mistake a solid copper insert for a thermal pad... you need to read more and do less. I suggest you follow the Alpha's instructions step by step VERY CAREFULLY.

I don't think Alpha 8045 comes with pads, maybe you are talking about the copper insert? Don't remove the copper insert.

CJHawke, I hope they didn't scare ya away. I will give you credit on one part though, you knew that you shouldn't use a pad AND Artic Silver together, the newbies that do that, ummm shouldn't be building thier own computer. :) Oh, and the second credit point ya get is that you asked here first!!!

So hay guys, it could of been worse!!!
