I tried two different dram frequency settings with those timings with it set to 401 and it still fails after one pass of test #5 on memtest86

Also tried 5-5-5-15 at 401 and still can't pass test #5

My parts come in tomorrow. Same CPU. Will post here with results.

E6400
Gigabyte S3
Corsair XMS2 2 x 1GB PC6400 DDR2-800 4-4-4-12

Wondering if we got a bad batch or something. Parts ordered at NewEgg on 1-5-07

Yeah I have no idea at all. Playing around with it last night was just really frusturating. I have no idea if the ram I got sucks or if it's the cpu. Even dropping the fsb around 330-335 I ended up being able to pass two passes of test #5 and then it bombed again.

I was also looking thru the newegg reviews on the ram and people are saying that super talent doesn't use D9 chips on this memory anymore, not sure if that is going to be a problem for me

If anyone has any idea....HELP!!! lol if I had longer hair I might start pulling it out

I'm pretty nubish at this too since I haven't been overclocking anything in recent years. However, I don't think the RAM will be a problem up to FSB400. It was rated "STOCK" at DDR2-800 which equals FSB 400, which would give you 8x400=3200MHz. I think D9 chips come into play when you try to go over FSB 400.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. My parts should be here in 2 hours and I'll be starting my overclock.

Yeah I honestly think I am just setting something wrong and that is what's causing my issues. I oc'd my past two P4 setups, but this new bios on the way things change as far as the ram freq is really throwing me for a loop. I assumed I would be comfortable and would be able to oc this pretty easy from everything I had been reading for months....and thats just not the case at all.

Can anyone post some info on a good starting point for oc'ing? Also when starting off the oc'ing I read that you set the fsb to 266, dram freq to 533. That should start you off at a 1:1 and then you raise the fsb from there? SO if I was setting the dram freq to 800 that's totally wrong?

I am looking to do a near similar build myself...

E6400
P5B Deluxe

but was looking at

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) OCZ2A8002GK

are the

SUPER TALENT 2GB (2 x 1GB)

a much better choice ?

and an 8800gtx, although will probably hold out to see if the ATI really does post the numbers that were previewed on their DX 10 card.

Suggestions on a cooler? Air or liquid (if cheap enough) would be fine (always wanted to try a liquid cooling system, but price in the past has kept me from it)

thoughts? (obviously I am new-ish to OC'ing, especially the memory aspects, done FSB / mult OC's before)

I would say follow the memory guide posted in this forum. General rule: You get what you pay for. I personally don't see a huge benefit in going over FSB 400. The enthusiast part of me wants it, but the wallet says no. My Corsair cost just a little more than the cheapest 2GB kit so I said why not. I might get lucky and go over 400. However, I'm not going to cry if I don't. 3.2GHz out of 2.13 is a huge bargain.

Ok another stupid question. All of the guides I am reading or threads where people are posting bios shots it says to set ram timings as listed for your ram, set dram freq to 800 and then up the FSB.

Now when you do this is the dram freq supposed to increase on it's own as you up the fsb OR am I setting something wrong. I was just thinking things thru and realizing that anytime I change the fsb it changes #'s listed for the choices for dram freq

When I get home tonight I am going to start off from scratch

I think if the ratio is 1:1 then your dram freq will increase if you up the FSB. It sounds like you read something pertaining to the new i680 motherboards that allow asynchronous dram timings. Therefore you can lock dram at 800 and clock the sh~t out of the FSB.

Man it took me like 2 hours to put this beast together. First impressions while Windows XP files load:

1) The Big Typhoon aint no joke. I've never seen anything so massive in my life! (let the jokes fly now)
2) I hate being poor. Trying to scrimp on this build really turned out to be a pain in the ass. Couple more years and financial freedom is mine!
3) The Ultra 500W PSU is LOUD. Easily the loudest fan in the system and therefore I can't tell what else would be too loud. I'd gladly eat McD's for a week just to replace it. Any recommendations on QUIET power supplies??

THanks.

Got home from work and started from scratch. Same damn results all over again. Really starting to wonder why I wanted to do this upgrade

I've passed Memtest #5 at FSB 350 = 2.8GHz

Running Memtest 1,3,5 at FSB 400 = 3.2GHz

OK, now my computer won't turn back on. LOL. I think my PSU is a serious POS. Clearing CMOS won't help either. I'm trying to unplug as much crap as possible.

Just curious, but where did you feel you had to scrimp on this rig? It looks pretty solid besides the GPU?

1. The power supply sucks.
2. Hard drives aren't very good. Raptors have been out forever and I still can't handle one.
3. Yes, video card isn't that great.
4. Using old case.

Memtest #5 at FSB 350 = 2.8GHz....... PASSED
Memtest #5 at FSB 400 = 3.2GHz....... FAILED
Memtest #5 at FSB 375 = 3.0GHz....... PASSED
Memtest #5 at FSB 385 = 3.1GHz....... PASSED
Memtest #5 at FSB 400 = 3.2GHz....... FAILED!! only made it through 1 pass.

Should I loosen the ram timings? or up the CPU voltage (currently: 1.375V)?

Memtest #5 at FSB 401 = 3.2GHz....... PASSED CoreV: 1.3875
(The 401 trick really does help. Weird.)

Seasonic.

Other good choices can be found in a table on this page:

Sweet. Thanks for the guide.
