Hello there Guys, I am almost ready to by the ATI 5850 Graphic Card. Either I am gona order it this week or next week, but soon. So far nothing from nvidia and from what I have been reading, nothing BIG is gona come from nvidia. Also One of my biggest reason that I am leaning towards ATI because of the HDMI Port Output. I am planning to get me a 42" to 46" LCD or LED TV and this would be a really good Graphic Card. None of the nvidia cards have HDMI ports Period (Built on Card not adapter)

So I just wanted to get your final Thoughts before I place my order. Is ATI 5850 a Good Choice. Also I have never bought ATI Cards before, But What Brand of ATI 5850 is a Good Product? Thank you for all your help.

On a Side-Note, Can good Recommendation for a SATA Add-On Controller Card?

P.S. Josh

I'm waiting for the models with after-market coolers to appear (I want it to run quieter and a small factory overclock never hurts). I'll be looking out for Club 3d versions and the Sapphire Vapor-X edition. In any event, based on my experience with the 4850 and the reviews, I would say this is the card to get.

All boards have the reference design at the moment so all of the brands will have the same performance. The only thing that sets companies apart is warranty and customer service. XFX has a double lifetime warranty, and I think Asus might have a voltage tweaking application for overclocking. The hd5850 is a great choice though. I picked up an XFX on launch day and am very pleased with it.

Do it. I'm using my 5850 to power my monitor & LCD tv via HDMI. I'm going to pick up a 2nd 24" monitor and get that running via display port in the nearish future. I'm using the reference Sapphire card and it really doesn't need improved cooling as far as I can tell. It's whisper quiet and the fan rarely gets above 30%. Get whatever brand you prefer, is in stock, or has the best warranty/service reputation. I loved my sapphire 4830 (now in HTPC), so I decided to get another one. Native HDMI port is definitely nice, though the DVI-HDMI adaptor on my 4830 also worked perfectly fine. Just a little clunkier.

5850s can fit many aftermarket cooling solutions meant for the 4800 series due to having the same bolthole pattern around the GPU. You may be able to leave the baseplate from the stock cooler in place to cool the RAM and VRMs. (You can NOT do this with a 5870.)

Check around, but I've already seen an Arctic Cooling 48xx unit successfully attached to a 5850 as well as an MCW60 waterblock using stock plate (which is exactly what I'm going to be doing).

Is it seriously that quiet?

Granted, I haven't done any rigorous dB testing, but it is a very quiet card. The only time I hear it is during startup when the fan spins up briefly. It's quieter than my 4830 was, and cooler. Highest temp it hit was 76C in the Heaven DX11 benchmark and more like high 60's or low 70's, depending on the game.

Go up over 50% and it sounds like a hair dryer, but the card does run cool.

hhe I find above 32% on my 4890 is noticeable. I like running it at 28-29% fan speed in idle 🙂
