Just had to share how lucky we all are to make it trough each day.

Okay, I am in a CQB training class and we are doing entries on a funhouse in a stack of four operators. Pretty simple right?? No gas masks, no gloves, none of that crap, and it is fully illuminated. Well I am point man on an entry team and the third man through the door an operator for an agency who will remain nameless to save them the shame must have slipped on some brass or something. He tumbles and on the way down squeezes the trigger and empties his entire 30 round magazine. Idiot not only had his MP-5 on full auto rather than burst, but he didn't index. Luckily no one was hit, but looking at the holes in the plywood and the video tape later I judged that several rounds went right over my head and missed me by fractions of an inch. Helmet would not have stopped the round at that range. The instructor told me that those guys keep coming in and after ten or even twenty years of tactical work they have gotten into the habit of not indexing. /me lucky to be alive.

three questions:
#1 What does CQB stand for?
#2What is a funhouse?
#3What is indexing?

well, i know that CQB stands for close quarters battle, and i guess a funhouse would be a training mock-up, but i'm stumped by "indexing" too. Can anyone enlighten me?

btw. thats one close shave!

I'm lost on 3 as well. I guess it has to do with keeping your index finger away from the trigger.

Anyway what the hell do you do for a living justin?

Indexing is leaving your trigger finger/index finger off the gun trigger. You lay your finger flat along the side of the gun.

Holy crap crazy!!!

Justin the bullet dodger!! Whew!

I'm scared sh|tless of guns.. Doesn't mean I want them made illegal (I'm all for gun rights).. But, I would never own one. I'm too jumpy and reactive. My adrenaline would be going for a month after that. I wouldn't be able to walk right.

30 bullets and they hit no one?! LUCKY!

CQB = close quarters battle (a gunfight)

funhouse, is a training room setup to practice storming a room and capture/kill the bad guys and or get the hostages.

Index (at least when I did it) referred to everyone keeping trigger finger off the trigger, and pointing guns indifferetn direction so not to point guns at the good guys and covering as alarge an area as possible

1. Close Quarters Battle
2. Small mockup of a house that you use live ammo in
3. Finger off trigger but very close ie: laying on top of trigger guard so it allows very fast access to the trigger.

The guy was asked to leave the class and his agency will not be allowed to send any more people through the course. I also just got off the phone and with further review of the tapes it turns out he did not empty the entire magazine. The weapon stopped when it got to one of the dummy rounds. (we randomly place dummy rounds in with the live rounds so you get used to clearing malfunctions), following the pattern of the rounds in the plywood if had not gotten to the dummy round the range safety officer thinks I may have been shot. /me even luckier than I thought.

I thought that was called "common sense." Didn't even know it had a name :)

You would be surprised. It was common practice up until relatively recently for many law enformcement agencies to teach thier students to carry weapons cocked and locked, safety's off, finger on triggers, etc etc. Then it was realized that #1 people were getting killed who didn't need to be killed #2 A properly trained person using proper techniques was just as fast if not faster than someone using the old unsafe techniques

Well looks like justint is as courageous in life as he is in thought on the forum. Still didn't respond to my retribution comment though. :D

By the way, very glad you weren't shot.

I'm not a gun guy, so forgive my ignorance. Isn't there something other than real bullets that you guys can use during training exercises that will still be effective?

All it takes is one idiot.

I'm surprised guns don't come covered in warning labels:

"Warning: firearm may fire when finger placed on trigger."
"Warning: do not look down barrel of loaded gun."
"Warning: not to be used during copulation."
"Warning: impact of bullets may cause serious damage and possible loss of life."
"Warning: If you read these warnings and had to think about it, please return you firearm and never let loose with so much as a rubber band."

I'm not courageous by any means. I usually don't like to bring up such things as God, luck, whatever, but this was shear luck that helped me out. Makes you really really think about things hard, and trust me I am.
