So I was on my way home in my car and I drove by a cop (college cop). The cop followed me for awhile and then stopped me, did the whole license and registration thing. Then took me outside and showed me that my tail lights were out. Now, he said he wouldn't give me a ticket this time because I'm a first year, but could I have gotten a ticket for that?

of course.

but it's something cops are generally cool about, since how the hell are you supposed to know that your taillight is out?

Most cars nowadays have lights on the dashboard that will tell you it's out. My 1998 Camry has that so usually I know when my lights need to be fixed.

On my old van I relied on friends who would be nice enough to tell me. I got stopped once for the light on your license plate being out. I was surprised the cop caught that one. Then again he tailed me for like 5 min at least. It's such a small light that gives a little light on your plates and even then it's hard to tell since most peoples headlights already give illumination to your rear plates.

Turn signals usually stop blinking when one of the bulbs goes out, but headlights and tail lights are often not known until someone tells you.

Cops can definitely give tickets for this, though. They can also require that you get the car inspected after fixing the issue.

I thought light problems were a secondary offense? I guess I better figure out why the tail lights indicator is lit up on my dashboard... and has been for 2 months.
