I am just one of the people who cant seem to get there hands on one of those Wal-Mart note books. I did find another deal that I think is pretty good (not quite the Wal Mart deal though :( Here are the specs tell me what ya think, I know it would involve memory upgrade and a dvd drive, but memory is cheap right now... My knowledge of laptops is limited so please...help a brother out!!

550MHz Intel® Celeron? Processor, 32MB RAM, 5.0GB HDD, 24X CD, 56Kbps Modem, 12.1" High Performance Addressing Display, Windows Me

If anyone is interested in this you can use me to get the IBM friends
price of $699.

The next up model with the TFT screen is $849

Lowcarb, you got PM!

The HP deal is practically a steal. The thinkpad has less memory, a crappier screen, and no dvd...I'd imagine to get the same config that it'd cost about $1200 at least on a thinkpad.

It's not a bad deal, just not as good a deal as the HP deal.

Just a warning to everyone here: The i SERIES SUCK. I know a lot of you guys want to run win2k on your laptop. Don't expect to on this one. I have an I series 1400 (type 2621-42u), and amoung other things, it will not run win2k properly. The bios has some ACPI bugs. About 2 months ago I was told there would be a BIOS update that fixes those bugs, but there still is none. So I'm left with the choice of leaving ACPI on and having a VERY unstable system, which only runs at 1/2 the proper speed, or disabling ACPI, and getting a stable system and full speed, but NO power management or even BATTERY METER. IBM refuses to help you if you are using something other than the OS that was loaded on it from the factory. I have found several other people with the same problem, and also know that Mandrake 7.1 causes the problem.
So, you anandtechers planning to run win2k on it, don't expect to, or make sure it has a good return policy.

Hmmm... I bought a refurbished Dell Laptop for 521 $US

266 MHz PII
64 MB RAM
4.3 GB HDD
13.3" TFT (Max res 1024x768)
24x CD-ROM
Floppy drive
Case
33.6 Modem

The only problem is that i bought it from dellauction.com - it was a pain in the @ss to bid on it. (I actually ended up sniping it in the last 30 seconds).
