I ran a search, didn't seem to be posted before... So...

Last issue of CPU contained information about a site that allows you to download songs, paying by the megabyte. Some things cost $0.02 per megabyte, but most cost $0.01 per megabyte. You will find almost ANY song you are looking for. You can choose the encoding format AND the bitrate. It is simply incredible. You must prepay though. You have the choice of, if memory serves me correctly, $10 for 1GB, $20 for 2GB, and so on and so forth. They also provide a VERY handy program that you can download. The program uses a Napster/Kazaa-like interface and runs in the system tray. There was not a DROP of spyware/adware installed on my computer with this program. It runs VERY stable and doesn't take up very much in the ways of system resources. You can have multiple connections to the server downloading the same file, giving quite consistant download speeds of 150 kb/s.

The 128 encoding DOES tend to have some bass buzz, so I suggest using the 196...

NOTE: Site is in russian, but IN UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER YOU CAN SELECT ENGLISH
Finally, the site is: [link deleted]

Thanks for letting us know about the site! This may be a bit off-topic, but I don't like how so many people say that "You will find almost ANY song you are looking for" or something along those lines because I can't seem to find any services that will even have half of the types of songs I listen to. I listen to VERY many different types of music. For English, genres include trance, dance, hip hop, slow jams, r&b, oldies, rock (punk, soft, etc), rap, pop, alternative, country, and Christian. I also listen to music in several other languages, including Chinese (four different dialects), Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Hmong, and Italian. I also listen to just instrumental pieces and such. There may be some types I have forgotten to include =P

Let's just say I really love music,

It's legal, and they have most songs in lossless or high bitrate VBR.

No, it's not legal...are you really that naive? Some russian company rips songs from cd's, and sells them online on a slick website. I don't support RIAA and their tactics, but I know for a fact they don't endorse this website, nor does anyone in the US music industry. This company says on their own site that it's not legal outside russia and they cannot be responsible for non-russian people using their system

The site is been around for quite a while now and alot of people have used their credit card without any problems. If it came down it to, I'd use my card with them, though I prefer Paypal in general.

The lossless option is nice, but expensive. A full CD downloaded losslessly is probably 350-400MB, and at $0.02/MB that's $7-$8 a CD. You can get the actual CDs off of eBay or a used CD store for around the same price and without the legal dilemna.

Yeah, I stick to LAME VBR and get entire CDs for a buck or two. Question the legality all you want; read the bigger thread here for more opinions. This site was on TechTV and got more publicity lately. BTW, I've used my CC on it for a while with no issues; and the downloads are faster with the new version of their explorer software (200kbps for me).

Something to consider: this site has built a database of everyone who has paid for the probably illegal downloads. At some point the RIAA is going to give the Russian authorities a bigger bribe than they're now getting from the all folks, or they might even pay the all folks directly to get that customer database.

Comcast and other cable companies do this all the time with cable descrambler sellers, they shut them down, get their customer list, then start collecting money from all the cable stealers.

It's been posted before, discussed before, and in the end, it's just as illegal. So, by downloading from this site, you're simply paying for the same illegal downloading as if you downloaded them for free.

Russian Authorities can do nothing about this, because in Russia, this is legal. Privacy Policy of allofmp3.com says that they won't sell your information. RIAA simply CAN'T get involved in international matters like this... Actually, they can, but they're not dumb enough to...

Yes, I want to give my credit card info to a Russian company for a "slicker interface". NOT.

As far as higher quality, I suppose you just have to know where to look.

Is it illegal to use this site in the US? Probably. But at least the artists get SOMETHING, since Allofmp3 does indeed pay licensing fees to ROMS (more or less the Russian equivalent of the RIAA) which then filters the money back to the artists. So you can at least feel a little warmer and fuzzier getting music from allofmp3 versus Kazaa and friends.

I hope the artists enjoy the .00000000000001 cent per song theyre getting from your 3 cent song. In russia music is cheap because people cannot afford to pay the price americans pay. The artists more than likely get nearly nothing - and definately nearly nothing from you downloading a song. If they did they wouldnt be able to afford to transfer a MB for 1 cent.

The artists probably only get that from album sales in the us. They make their money from tours and sponsoring products anyway. Fudge the RIAA.

That being said, the price isn't that cheap. Figure a song, at a decent level (192Kbps) is probably about 7 megs, and there are 15 songs on a cd, so thats 105 megs/album. Which works out to 10.5 cents an album.

I don't know if any of the rest of you have been listening to any of the music coming out lately, but i'd say that's about an even trade.
