AllState Insurance fun with my Dad

Golgatha

Lifer
This one threw me for a loop.

Cliffs:

1) Dad gets a busted water heater and incurs $5,000 worth of water damages to household.

2) Gets bill for house, boat, and two vehicles all insured with AllState and sees a $200 increase in premiums. Knew there would be a $70 increase because of claim filed (did have claim free discount).

3) 30% surcharge on policy for next three years because he is now "uninsurable" since the claim was "preventable". Been with them 20+ years and his agent says he can't do anything about it.

4) Pays $50 less than before switching to American Family because the claim doesn't show up in the big database in the sky. Disclosed up front about the water damage.

5) American Family and Dad profit because of gestapo tactics employed by AllState.

6) Son (me) is also looking for new insurance.

Moral of story - If you make a non "act of God" claim and have an awesome claim free history and excellent credit score; switch companies not now but right now.

Every single story involving Allstate that my parents have involves someone getting screwed to the point where a lawyer gets involved.

Hmm, my GF's parents make claims like crazy with Allstate. Sure they pay for it in premiums but they don't ever have a problem making a claim.

Examples of insurance fucknuttery:

Grandparents house was built with a (then) new style of press in fittings for the water lines. While on vacation, one pops out and floods the house. Allstate comes by and has an auditer make a fair amount and says they could discard the fitting. Before the check is written, another auditer is assigned to it, and says since they can't show him the fitting, they won't pay.

Dad gets rearended by a soccer mom who didn't see him stopped at a red light while he was in a white suburban with phone company logos and equipment all over it. Allstate tries to claim that they don't have to pay medical since Worker's Comp covered it.

My dad was in a collision with someone with Mercury insurance. Mercury claims that his payment was a day late (but they cashed the check), refunds the guy the amount of the payment instead of covering him.

I was hit by a guy with 20th (now 21st) Century insurancy. I went three months before getting it settled.

My sister hit my car while parked in the driveway, within a week AAA had the car fixed. (okay, so that's not fucknuttery)

I've heard that State Farm and Farmers insurance is good, but don't have any stories about them.

My Dad's problem was he made a single claim with 20years of not making any claims. I did get a PM from someone on the forums from AllState, so maybe they can check to see if the 30% surcharge is standard company policy or not. They definitely felt something better could be done given the long standing relationship.

For what it's worth, my Dad ended up with American Family. I've had two dealings with them myself. Once for a 77 Plymouth Fury that ran a red light and totaled my old Ford Escort (Dad was involved with this one, as his name was on the title still), and once for a Suburban who made a left turn from the right-hand lane and hit my wife's car. In both cases the cars were seen about and the checks were written within 2-3 weeks. They provided a rental vehicle as well both times. My father and I remember such things when it comes time to look for new insurance.
